NSW Muslim Holidays

Sydney-based Muslim community spokesman Keysar Trad said workers of all faiths were entitled to a break and called for the two main Muslim public holidays to be recognised as well.

"It does give the impression that we are a solely Christian nation and it raises the issue of other religions too, whether you are Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim," he said.

Keysar is a well known respecter of other folks beliefs, so we should listen to his thoughts on promulgating Muslim holidays in NSW.

Strange though he didn't mention Jewish holidays in this report from news.com.au.

He cited the example of Lebanon where Christian and Muslim public holidays are widely celebrated by members of both faiths.

Lebanon , that haven of tolerance, why shouldn't we import their tolerance towards each other to NSW.

Government is giving major holidays off - Anzac day, Christmas and Easter - these have always been the big holidays. I don't see it as being a Christian thing. Anzac day is not a Christian holiday.

What next? Hindu, Jewish, Scientologist, Exclusive Brethren, Nimbin Marijuana Church?

And what about us atheists - can we get world atheist day off? And agnostics - can they get an uncertainty day off?

Maybe they should just make it that you can't be forced to work on any public holidays.

We have more than 140 religions officially registered in Australia +atheists if all holidays are included in NSW holidays callendar, we would be Holliday Capital of the World!

Ever since prayers continued past 6pm, about 25 yrs ago, that mosque has not been the same.

i think sri lanka is one of the holiday capitals of the world... im sure they have at least 1 or 2 public holidays per month.

Used to live in Hong Kong. Loads of public holidays - because they have the usual Christmas, Easter etc, but then they also have Chinese New Year and other Chinese holidays - moon cake day was one I think. Yummy.

Mind you, you work your **** off the rest of the time, so not an easy ride work wise.

Now back to old Keyser, he is obviously forgetting that Christmas Day is really an original celebration of the winter solstice, celebrated by Pagans, because the shortest day of the year was over - obviously, these were Pommy Pagans. So the whole Christian thing is a myth.

Trainspotter obviously worships his boat, one of the benefits of being a wealthy plutocrat (sorry, little in joke there........). Does he get to have anannual boat day off where he takes all his mates out to sea, gets pissed and celebrates all things boatie? Sounds a lot more fun than getting on hands and knees and praying to Allah, particularly if you have dodgy knees like me.

Easter is basically a pagan celebration of spring. Perhaps if we demystified christmas and easter and celebrated them for their far more logical pagan reasons everyone could enjoy them

Every day is national boatie day for me and I get down on bended knee and get another beer from the esky and celebrate my good fortune. Worship is such a strong word there gooner when it comes to boats. There are times when the ocean is doing it's best to upset the relationship between man and machine. The running costs also bring a tear to my eye sometimes. And it is not a tear of admiration.

But I do not believe that NSW should have a public holidy for the Muslim population. If they want to take the day to worship ... go for it. Leave Australia the way it is. "Young and free" springs to mind. AS in the national anthem.
