As an importer, wholesaler and retailer all rolled into one, one notices the directions that products and dollars flow around the country - at least in my little sphere.

90% of my local suppliers are Melbourne based, 80% of all products sold are interstate - in order of volume: Melbourne, Brisbane (and surrounds), Sydney, and Western Australia.

Boeing pulling their facility out of Sydney in favour of Melbourne adds to the imbalance.

Why is Sydney/NSW so badly mismanaged? Is is all to be blamed on the string of Premiers we've had? Is it the selling off of all our income bearing assets (lotteries, toll ways etc.)?

Maybe it's the claimed imbalance in GST collections versus distributions?

Transport is buggered, hospitals are buggered, roads are buggered ... OK, we still have water.

Anyone have thoughts on how NSW can be "fixed"?

Is there anyway that we can see a financial balance sheet for NSW? I reckon I could put a red line through some expenses that would help sort things out.......

Any government in power too long becomes corrupt, stale and loses direction add in the unions and there you have it.
The fact that NSW has a Workers Compensation system that has being one of if not the most expensive in Australia for some years and the fact that against all principals of the westminster system and fairness employers are guilty until proven innocent in any workers comp cases it probably only leaves it for you and me to toss a coin to see who switches the light off when we leave.

I agree. The problem runs deep in NSW.
It's also a prick of a state for business, way too overregulated. A strong opposition would also be nice.
Currently we have a front for Joe Tripodi and Eddie Obeid in Keneally. Amazing how these two guys control NSW from behind the scenes. If she wins next election I'm moving state again.
 
It comes down to this. You can build for the future with a healthy level of optimism. Or you can manage decline. They are the two choices.

NSW government consistently manages decline, hence the mess the state is now in and will remain in whilst that approach continues.

In theory, NSW ought to be in a better position than any state except WA and possibly Qld (due to mining) but mismanagement has blown it.

Solutions? Start building for the future, stop managing decline. And stop flogging yesterday's dead horse that's proven to fail - in the long term, privatisation wrecks it for everyone other than a select few investment banks.

Roads / transport is a classic example. You can build for the future, think long term and fix the problems the way it's always been done - borrow some money and then pay it off over 30 or 50 years. Or you can cry poor and do dodgy deals to line the pockets of banks who build the infrastructure, whilst borrowing to fund recurrent expenditure of no long term value - that's a classic case of managing decline.

Too much waste. Too many dodgy deals. And far too much of a defeatist attitide - manage as though you're broke and in due course you will be broke. Now NSW is just about broke...

I agree with Smurf.

The NSW Government's sale of "NSW Lotteries" to the Tatts Group belies belief. Everybody knows that no one sells a gold mine, except a fool.

Whoever is responsible for selling NSW Lotteries should be subject to a public flogging before being sent to a mental instituition.

It is not the Government's asset to sell, it belongs to the taxpayers.

Governments come and go, they should require a referendum to sell something that is not theirs.
 
Last month I was at a Sydney Police Station (Eastwood). This is quite a large station and responsible for a huge chunk of Sydney suburbia.

In fact the Local Area Command covers: Beecroft 2119, Carlingford 2118, Castle Hill 2154, Cheltenham 2119, Cherrybrook 2126, Denistone 2114, Denistone East 2112, Denistone West 2114, Dural 2158, Eastwood 2122, Epping 2121, Glenhaven 2156, Macquarie Park 2113, Marsfield 2122, North Epping 2121, Pennant Hills 2120, Ryde 2112, West Pennant Hills 2125, West Ryde 2114

Or, visually, pretty much most of the map attached.

The Officer I was speaking to was told me that to service that entire area they only had 3 patrol cars, and major staff issues to handle customer enquiries.

This morning at 10.00am I went to drop my wife off for her University exam and had to join the queue for a random breath test. For this one RBT there were 5 police cars and 8 uniformed Police Officers.

Now of course DUI is a major problem, but at 10.00am in the morning? With so many assets at one of the many locations around Sydney. One wonders where the priorities lie....

I got off the Train this afternoon at my western Sydney station (mid/small size suburban) to see about 14 police and one sniffer dog standing at the bottom of the stairs...is state rail losing that much in fare evasion? on a Thursday Afternoon. :dunno:
