Well the time has arrived to update my trusty old Dell P3 800mhz latitude laptop. The old brick has served me well and has been one of the most reliable computers I have ever owned. However after 6 years of loyal services the time has come to retire.

I am now looking for a "lighter" desktop replacement (if there is such a thing) and would appreciate advice, or user experience in relation to the different makes out there.

Currently I'm considering another Dell, but as I would prefer something lighter am considering a macbook pro (with bootcamp / parallels) or maybe even an asus model ( I hear a lot of good feedback about G1/G2 series).

So share with us what notebook you use (if any) and your feedback

I have recent experience with:

Dells - Good value for money, but not of the same build quality as say an IBM or a MAC

Macs - An expensive hardware platform given performance bang for buck, BUT they are undisputably sexy, both in terms of the O/S and the external aesthetics. You must make sure that parallels will run your charting software (if you use it).

IBMs - Workhorses. Tough, solid, feel good to use if you're a heavy user. Bland, bordering on ugly. You will pay extra for their sturdiness, so if you don't move your lappy around much, perhaps you can't justify this.

Toshibas - Suck. Over-rated, but some people really like them.

The ASX Gorilla.
 
I switched over to mac from microsoft a couple of years ago. IMO microsoft must seriously cut corners in the writing of windows they always seen to catch viruses or spyware even with the latest antivirus software. Their programming seems to be full of bugs. With my mac i've never had a virus or trojan or anything and they now have excellent compatability with microsoft programs. Very good machines that are very user friendly. Only downside is most trading programs only run on windows.
 
I voted for Dell because thats what I have now, and this is my first notebook.
I am very happy with it so far but I've only had it for around 6 months though. I use it fairly heavily though, so its held up well so far.
I also like the way you order a dell computer online by adding what you want and taking out what you don't want. Is that how all computer companies do it online?
 
I have had an Acer, NEC, LG and now have a DELL.

The best so far had been my DELL for price and quality and the office only buy's DELL now because of the easy customization of the product as discussed by 'Buy low, sell high'

Not so I'm afraid. All software, even your Mac, contains vulnerabilities in the code. You don't get viruses or spy/malware because Mac O/S and Safari are so rare in proportion to Windown/IE systems that they're not worth the trouble for blackhats to go after.
 
i used toshiba..
p35 for exact... hate the overheating...
but if you want desktop replacement..
try p100-105... think you will like it...

The proportion of Windows users compared to OS X definitely plays a part, but you can't discount that fact that OS X's heritage is UNIX. UNIX has been a secure multi-user environment right from the start.

Which O/S hosted the first Internet crippling worm back in the 80's? Give you a hint...begins with U, ends in X.
 
Tried other models for a long time. Now onto my third HP and very satisfied. Only changed models to upgrade.

That is certainly true for the majority asxgorilla however i have heard the osx platform is harder to hack then windows, although i cannot confirm that. Either way though you are going to have fewer security problems with a mac.
 
Apple. Their Intel offerings aren't quite as reliable as their PowerPC ones yet, wait for the next release of the MacBook Pro. The 'Speak & Spell' keyboard on the MacBook (non-Pro) sucks.

IBM don't actually make 'em anymore, they sold the PC line to Lenovo.

Toshibas tend to fall apart (I've had 2 out of 3 that did).

Compaq/HP seem good thus far.

Dell are... well... Dell... some people love 'em, I don't.

LG used to be called Goldstar, just remember that!

Asus, I've never seen one.

People do like the Fujitsu models, particularly the ultraportable Lifebook series.

Sony um seem to be a little troublesome finding drivers for their specific hardware.

We have had bad luck with Dell, over the past 12mo. 3 of our notebooks became unusable within months of being out of warranty. and only Dell can fix them.So we are going back to Asus.

My 12" apple PowerBook G4 is still fast and runs a 19" monitor side by side for trading. Virtual PC is too slow to run trading software.

Next laptop will be Intel chipped mac, and if parallels won't run PC trading software then I'll have to find an el-cheapo 2nd hand desktop!
 
Toshiba has problem with invertor/monitor tube.
I use Toshiba for a long time, but now i change to HP, Dell is OK and customer service with Dell is very good.
 
Apple G4 - about to upgrade to MacPro (til I heard Marklar's comments!! - I'm pretty sure all the wrinkles got ironed out by last Sept) My lappy's worked hard - but the number of times it crashes per year can be counted on one hand - great hardware with smooth OS.
 
I have used IBM, HP Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, and Acer. The Dell was great with nice keyboard but weighed as much as a boat anchor. I used to have the bricks with widescreen (the Acer was OK but battery life was really crap!) but now as I travel a lot I have gone back to an HP Compaq NC6220 with 1.5 g Ram. Its 14" screen, very light, the battery lasts about 3+ hours. It's OK but more and more I see them as disposables, chuck em out every 2 years and get a new one!
