I rather like this ascerbic wit from the news.com.au blog... http://www.news.com.au/national/tec...chool-website/comments-e6frfkw9-1225824191503

Andrew of Penrith Posted at 9:10 AM Today
I would like to suggest that the government set up a website called MyLocalMember.com.au On that website it would be possible to look up how many election promises each local member has kept and broken, how often the Local Member goes on taxpayer funded "research" trips to exotic countries and there should also be information on how many days a year the local member works. I think that this would restore more balance to the governments reporting on what is going on in this great country of ours.

Good one, Andrew of Penrith!! :D :D

Couldn't agree more....

The internet is very slow speed today.
Looks like everyone is logged on to check how their school rates on that new Fed govt website.

There is also a possibility that those not happy with the decision to run such a site try Denial of Service trick.

Yep, sure looks me before my hair went grey and my teeth fell out.

Back to the topic...

At least the media will get a lot of mileage out of this luvverly new PC Government initiative -they will have an absolute field day compiling their own "League Tables" and making merry with the comparisons of 'good' vs 'evil' schools....

Thank you, Julia. You are such a godsend. We needed some light entertainment! ;)

Mmmm. Not only the media -
Real Estate Institute of NSW chief executive Tim McKibbin said agents would use the website to cite the high standard of local schools as a selling point when marketing properties.

I bet KRudd 'n Co. knew that it would become a useful RE Marketing tool!! :D :D

Parents are already taking their kids out of underperforming schools on this measurement and enrolling them in better performing ones.

What a kerfuffle this will cause.

Labor love social meddling.

Speaking of which....

THE Rudd Government will expand the controversial My School website if it wins the next federal election. The website, which has come under attack from teachers and their union, compares the literacy and numeracy results of schools.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said it should also include information on school bullying, classroom innovation and local community participation. "In other words, the rounded view of the school's overall culture," Mr Rudd told Channel 9.

"(And) If we are re-elected that's where we'd take My School in 2011."

Ah, the first steps in The Great Oz Social Engineering Experiment, according to Chairman KRudd. What next, a rewrite of Mao's "Little Red Book"? :D

Principal of Melbourne High criticizes the the ALP's My School website.

My School website a 'crock', says top educator

MIKI PERKINS - THE AGE
February 8, 2010

THE principal of Victoria's top-performing government school has slammed the Federal Government's My School website, describing it as a ''crock''.

Jeremy Ludowyke, the principal of Melbourne High - which last year was the top government school in the VCE - said selective-entry schools like his that stood to gain the most from published league tables should be the loudest critics against ''this nonsense''.

In a comment piece published in The Age, Mr Ludowyke said the index of community socio-educational advantage (ICSEA), used to define similar schools, was a clunky measure: "This amounts to: all children in this district are orange, you live in this district, therefore you are orange,'' he writes.

Despite all the negativity about it, i believe it's one of the best moves.

It'll create competition with the surrounding schools and competition creates innovation. Parents won't compare a school in the west to Melbourne High so the notion of comparing selective-entry schools is nonsense. People will compare Melbourne High to Xavier, Queens College etc

The school system should be run like a business instead of a government monopoly and for a business to gain customers (in this case students) it needs to provide a good service and in order to gain the edge in the marketplace, it will have to be innovative and unique.

It should also have suspensions, expulsions and attendance listed on that site. Behaviour is also very important, not just academic achievements. My mate back in high school was really smart (95%+ in most of his Maths tests) but always got into fights, graffiti the school, drugs, smoke etc

But there is only one thing it's lacking is that teachers need incentives to improve - more pay, new books, computers etc.

Here is an idea for Rudd, how about keeping your funding promise to schools. Interactive blackboards and lots of other equipment have been cut on the sly.
