G'day all,

I am moving to Cairns with my 4 year old son soon and wanted to get some advise.

I work in the disability/aged care sector so wondering what suburbs may be of advantage on that front?

Also, wonder if anybody knows of any good boxing gyms that are around?

Where is the best place to do your grocery shopping? Is there an ALDI up in Cairns?

Do the basketball courts in Cairns offer casual shoot arounds? And is there a community basketball presence there? Unusual question, but where I live (Melbourne), there is a big competitive basketball culture where good players just meet up and play. Hoping Cairns has some sort of culture on that front.

I was going to try out for the QBL, but I suppose it may be more competitive than VBL in Victoria due to the volume of teams.

Any advise/feedback would be greatly appreciated as I am a little bit nervous about the move as I have basically lived in Melbourne my whole life. My family network reside in Melbourne.

Regards,
Kash

Kash, you do know the place is full of Queenslanders?

Unfortunately you are wrong, robusta.

Forty years ago it was a Queensland town, now it's full of blow ins from Melbourne and Sydney, and there is no where to have a good puff of a cohiba anywhere in the CBD.

Quite a strange place so I am sure there are many basketballers there in their ill-fitting shorts and vacant grins.

Was just there a few weeks ago. Didn't see one basketball net. What's that saying about 'when in rome'? It's a water town. Fishing and diving are the two big things. Oh and tourism.

Nice place to visit but wouldn't want to live there. My first impressions were lots of tattoos and side boob. Second impression is that the buskers were lacking talent. Seriously bad singers there.

Visited Cairns recently, I can only comment on the Cable Wakeboarding park. Great fun and affordable.

Didn't the Cairns Taipans lose to the NZ Breakers in the NBL Grand Final not that long ago? Pretty sure of it and if I remember correctly the last time I was in Cairns I went to a NBL game at the Convention Centre to see the Taipans beat the Wildcats. It was all a bit sketchy cause I had a liquid lunch at the Rattle n Hum on the Esplanade prior to aforementioned game.
