She is clearly mentally ill, do you really think a healthy mentally balanced person would willingly put herself through this? She is living the life yeah, she is lucky trawling through the mental institutions of Europe and the Middle East. Wish I was her - NOT

She has had a guardian appointed, clearly they weren't consulted as to whether she was able to travel.

If it's a general scepticism some have with mental illness..........you are entitled to it.........but unfortunately I can't have the luxury of such scepticism after seeing it ruin the livings of people around me over the years.........I too wish I lived in a world without it

If you are arguing that Ms Rau is some type of deliberate "unfortunate" seeking some gold at the end of the rainbow.........that would really stretched the boundaries of human's means/end rationality......plus it totally ludicrous.....perhaps if one sought compensation, one could find better scenarios than a privately run refugee concentration camp in Australia followed by a scenic jaunt to the Middle East where woman acting oddly are surely treated with symptathy....not...........

wouldnt have a clue what is really going down but interesting we find Ms Rau out and about on her own again,

passports under control, finance under control, no issue on the plane but a situation where she lands herself in very similar circumstances ($)

I find it interesting her sister blaming the Government. If it was my sister, I'd be on the first plane over there to make sure she got back on her meds and brought safely home.
 
The crew on the Melbourne had to fight for years to get compo. She turns tells every one she is German pass's go and get 2.6M.
Where is the justice Howard couldn't get the check book out quick enough and the other one from Vietnam go a good few bucks as well.

DO you mean the lady from the Philippines who was in a wheelchair and sent home and left to rot in an institution by the Government? Yeah, she was a winner too, wasn't she!

Dont you consider that Howard was so quick with the chequebook because he knew his Government had done something really wrong?

When someone is under the care of an appointed Guardian then the family have NO SAY in the care of the person. So her sister is powerless to help.

Section 7 (d) of the Guardianship Act 1998 "encourages involvement in decision making of the members of the adult’s existing support network". Definition of Support network may consist of members of the adult’s family; close friends of the adult; other people the tribunal decides provide support to the adult.
 

Is that the South Australian Act? Unless it is, it is meaningless to this case.

Honestly I could not find it written in the SA Act, however any Act would need to be read in conjunction with the Guardianships Best Practice Guidelines. I would be very suprised if they did exclude supports in decision making unless the guardian was living with the person concerned and could make all decisions on the spot, I doubt it. So logically the person is best supported by a team comprising of professional and social networks.

But the article did state the limitations of the Act not applying overseas, so I guess the sister could take action if she wanted to. All I'm saying is if it was me, I would not be leaving my sister in a jail overseas.
 

Always the government's fault. Taxpayers have to pay out every bleeding heart case. The system is a joke. How many hours did individual taxpayers have to work to fund the 2.6 million payout to Rau, just because she was locked up because she wouldn't identify herself?
What was her hourly rate for being housed, watching tv and playing table tennis? Can I apply?

Why do we have to take care of every Phillipino in a wheelchair? She was sent home to where she came from so what? Ridiculous. Legal system is a left wing joke that's why so many people lose faith in the whole system.

There are many things I object to the Government spending their money on; so that is just bad luck if you object to it. She was mentally ill; she couldnt identify herself. Her illness would have been obvious, so why didnt the Govt get a psychiatric assessment done.

Except that Vivian Solon, the Phillipino (sic) in the wheelchair was an Australian citizen who was illegally deported by the Australian Government in 2001. Immigration became aware of the error in 2003 but did nothing until 2005, even though Vivian's family lodged a missing person's report in 2003.

In October 2005, a report on Solon's deportation was released, following an inquiry conducted by former Victoria Police commissioner Neil Comrie. The report revealed that several senior DIMIA officials in Canberra knew about Solon's unlawful deportation in 2003 and 2004, and failed to act.

That is why the Government paid her out. They did real bad to an Australian citizen.

Vivian Solon was an Australian citizen. She was illegally deported.
She has as much right to be cared for as any other Australian citizen.
 
Of course governments make mistakes, logistically they have many illegal immigrants to deal with. But the payouts are just too much and the legal system is just ridiculous. There was never such huge recourse available in the past, it is a relatively recent impost.

I can tell you that governments in the future will not have the luxury of such red tape. Our competitors are now Asia where such a system would be, and is already openly laughed at.

The point in question is not that they made a mistake, which as you say, can happen, but that they did SFA for two years to resolve her situation knowing what they had done was illegal. There are mistakes, and then there is negligence. They got done for negligence.

They didn't get done, you and I and other taxpayers got done because it sat on some public servant's desk. Can't you see the point?
As far as how to spell "Filipino" or "Phillipino", what a ridiculous point for you to raise.
