Microsoft Word download

Could anyone give me a link to a free download of the basic Microsoft "Word"
programme?

I can't find it on the Microsoft website.

Currently have Microsoft Works Word Processor which works well for me but some people to whom I send a document prepared on this can't open it.

I know there will be ASF members who will be able to help here, so thanks.

Have a look at Openoffice (http://www.openoffice.org/).

It's free and allows you to create, edit and view all microsoft office file formats (word, excel, powerpoint etc). It also should look and feel quite familiar and is easy to use.

Thanks Doc. I've just had a look at that link, but there's no reference to 'Word" and my screen froze while I was looking at the site. Had to close down and restart.

I'd have thought it wouldn't be so difficult to just find a straightforward download just for Word on its own.

As far as I'm aware, there is no free version of Word.

How fancy is the formatting and graphics in the documents? Could you just save it in RTF format and send them that?

Also, this Microsoft document indicates that Word should be able to open Works documents, and Works 7 should be able to save files in .DOC format (otherwise you can get file convertors to do it).

Not quite sure what you mean Julia. Microsoft Word is commercial software only available through the (rather expensive) Microsoft Office suite.

However, this may help you, I believe it adds Word 2007 support to Microsoft Works, allowing you to save in that format. It says it's for Office, but meant to work on MS Works as well.

Thanks, GP. What is .DOC format? And what is RTF format? (sorry to be so ignorant.)
I'm technologically illiterate.

I originally had the basic 'Word' programme which came with Windows XP.
A virus crashed everything and the technician in replacing it all installed
Microsoft Works Word Processor instead.

I sent a fairly lengthy document to someone today and he has emailed me back that he can't open it.
Not the first time it has happened.

hey julia,
.DOC is just the basic format that your document is saved as...
I am not to familiar with works, but i know that with the latest microsoft word if you save a document in the 2007 format, and then i try to send it to someone with an older version, say 97-2003 they are unable to open it.
therefore you have to click 'save-as' and then select the format that they are using. its quite annoying as you would think the new version would be compatible with the older versions...
so if it is a new version of 'works' it may be the same deal...
hopefully this works, and if not im sorry if i have confused you even more

Hi Julia

.doc is the end of the file name (also know as an file extension) you create eg: "julia.doc" or "chocolate is very addictive.doc"

It is Microsofts standard to identify Word documents up until Word 2003, now the word documents are identified by a .docx extension, but Word 2007 can also save documents in .doc format for backward compatibility.

.rtf stands for "rich text format" and its a universal common format for exchange of information in documents with special text.

However Windows XP never came with Microsoft Word (or Works for that matter), unless someone put it on there, and only came with Notepad & Wordpad which are heavily cut down versions of Word as someone mentioned bieng the commercial paid version.

Getting a older copy is quiet common on ebay and anything prior to Office Professional with Word 2003 in it will cost upto $130 max

if you want a basic & free version of Word. then you can try google doc. its a free and online version of letter editing software. you can use any microsoft .doc with it

Hi,
You really should download openoffice (openoffice.org). Forget buying word when you don't even know what a .doc or .rtf file is, you won't know or see the difference between M$ word and Openoffice Writer.

Openoffice will get you going with all your wordprocessing and spreadsheets. And it won't set you back a penny.

Or to store all your docs online, as mentioned already Google Docs is also a good alternative - you just need a google account.

I think you might mean WordPad. That should still be there, under Programs->Accessories on the Start menu.

I've never used Works, but you should be able to use "File->Save As" and select "Rich Text Format (RTF)" (if not MS Word .DOC directly) before saving.

GP, selecting RTF works perfectly. Such a simple solution.

Is it a pirated version, Julia would be better off getting Openoffice.org version of Word which is still great and 100% free n legal. IMO

Tekman, I've had a look at Openoffice.org and can't see any reference to Word on it. Do you have to download the lot to get that?

You should see the spell checker though. No matter how bad your spelling is, you'll never get a word wrong.
