My worst fall was because of a dog running out and spooking the horse. The horse went left and I went right into a tree.

I thought this thread might be the best place for this story.
How the VW became the go to vehicle for Antarctica in the 1960's. Great bit of history.

Spent about three hours with a dowel rod, lengths of string, some long nosed pliers and plenty of grease to get the new gear change rod into the tunnel of the car. Ba$tard of a job, you need pixie hands but the strength of goliath.
I had neither.
But its done now, today I will connect up the gear linkage and tick another one of the 27 page long list.

Any progress Mick?

Would like a few photos if you can manage it.

Not at home at the moment, so can't take photos.
But the latest progress is that I was not happy with the original installation of the batteries.
The front battery box with two teslas battery modules replaced the old fuel tank, but it sat on a pair of rails attached to the fibreglass body,
The rear battery box which was even heavier as it has three tesla Modules was supposed to sit on the rear fibreglass floor behind the rear seats.
I was just not comfortable with either location, both from a static strength perspective, and also the kinetic side of things under extreme acceleration or perish the thought, in the case of an accident.
They probably would have been ok in the steel framed orignial beetle cabin body, but not with the fibreglass sports car body.
It all has to be approved by an engineer, so i just could not see it getting passed.
So I have had to chop into the fibreglass body and make steel frames to attach the battery boxes to the subframe of the violkswagon chassis.
It has taken a few iterations of trial snd error as I have to work around the suspension and steering components, as well as ensure there is sufficient travel for these components when moving.
I also had to adapt the steering shaft to accomodate a collapsible column that would fit underneath the front box.
I then had to change the locations of the attach points for the cooling pipes that cool the batteries because they interfered with the standard VW I beam.
It has been time consuming, and taken a bit of trial and error , but I think I have it sorted at last.
Now I have to make some proper engineered mounts after the cobbled together ones I made have given me all the correct dimensions.
Away till the end of the month, so will see if I can post some pics when back at the office.
