Some time ago, I bought a 1980's sports car called an Embeesa Charger.
Its a fibreglass body kit car from UK that uses the floor pan and running gear from a standard 1965 to 1980 beetle.
Instead of rebuilding the engine, bringing it up to 1600 CC specs, putting new disc brakes and steering etc,
I have decided to go with a company called Traction EV that provide a complete (although expensive) kit to use Tesla batteries and controllers to run an electric motor through the standard beetle clutch, gearbox and drivetrain.
It will have only about 150 kms of range, but that should be enough for toy car.
Given that the car is about 2/3rds the weight of the original beetle, should go like the clappers though.
Should be interesting.

As most of the EV bits have arrived, it was suggested that I start a new thread to track progress.
So here it is.
For those interested, here is a link to the original vehicle.
Will post progress reports along the way.

0-100 in 6s from what I've read of these projects. Popular in 1200 Datto's and the like.

I'm looking for a similar setup for a Toyota Echo which currently couldn't pull the head off a beer :)

This will be a unique project.:) Can't imagine there is another Embessa running around with an EV base.

How did it go as beetle powered beast ?

'Dt know.
When I got hold of it , it had not run for nearly thirty years.
Engine seized, plenty of rust in floor pan and beam, so complete rebuild.
I thought if I had to build a new engine, I would build one that was a little radical.

And by the way, you should never use the words beetle powered and beast in the same sentence.
just does not compute.

That is so true Mick, these days people are dropping the vee dub motor for a Subaru turbo, now that would put a bit of mumbo into it. ?

Really ? I had a couple of VDubs in my younger days. I remembering winding one up to 90mph down hill with a full car.
Very exciting indeed.

Beast is not quite the right word but when they were wound up with enough weight to keep it steady 75-80mph was well doable.:)

I have never had the pleasure of owning a beetle, but I did go out for a while with a girl who had inherited one from her grandfather.
The relationship did not last.

Sacrilege

Is a Hot Rod a sacrilege? What about a HQ Premier with Monaro gills, or a EH Holden with a 3 speed auto & SU carbies, are they all a sacrilege?

The Hot Rod scene has been around since the 1940’s and its always been about creating something different from the hum drum of the boring majority.

If you don’t get it you’re not part of it.

That's all cool.

But they aren't a 956.

HQs and EHs are egregious pieces of shyte without said enhancements. A 956 is a piece of art, like a '57 Corvette or a series 1 or 2 E-type, or a T-bird.

Farking with them is just blasphemy... an original sin ;)

There isn’t a Porsche 956 anywhere in this thread, other than your mysterious mention.
I did post a video of a modified Porsche 356, which was originally just a factory hotted up Volks.

Yes, my mistake, 356. That doesn't change anything, it's still a classic that people will pay a motza for in original condition.
