Hi everyone.

I'm heading to Mexico next week for 3ish weeks and am after a few tips, or ideas on best places to go.

(I have been to the Yukatan Peninsula and Mexico City before, but it was a fly by)

My girlfried Rach is currently in Peru with work and we meet in Mexico City on 25 Jan.

General plan is to head south east through Oaxaca, maybe to Puerto Angel, over to San Cristobal de Las Casas, Palenque, maybe Flores in Guetamala, Chetumal, and then drift up the coast to Cancun and Isla Mujeres and fly back to Mexico City.

Any recommendations?

If I drop in I could claim the trip as a tax deduction. Good one!

Actually, I'm flying there on frequent flyer points, so not much of a deduction...

Out near Cancum about an hours drive away is some Inca Ruins. Felt it was definitely worth the trip. The drive there is very good too because you drive through regular Mexican towns and you can see a very local view of how they live.

Although there are many beautiful beach resorts in Mexico...they're all mostly American owned and you tend not the get the true Mexican feel. That's not a slant against Americans. When I travel over seas I like to go to remote areas to get a true sense of the locals and see how they live.

Don't waste your time going to Tijuana...I felt it was nothing but a slum area where where kids from San Diego can go to drink, buy cheap drugs and prostitutes because there is not an enforceable drinking age there.

Chichen Itza?

Yep, been to Playa del Carmen and it's all yanks. Beautiful place though and the diving on Cozumel and the Cenotes is world class.

Sounds like I need to add this place in! Not sure if Rach will be happy with the prostitute bit though....

My partner is heading off to Tijuana on a consulting job in February. Sounds like a lot of nasty stuff happening there at the moment and there is a travel advisory stopping people going there! Guess that doesnt apply to the rest of Mexico - or is that just the new way of like in this neck of the woods?

I'm pretty sure that was it...but honestly if I was awake I was drunk that whole week. Was insane but good.

I actually think that's where the "donkey" show originated.

I found the Teotihuacan pyramids just out of Mexico City to be quite spectacular.

Mexico City itself is pretty cool to just walk around. Particularly at this time of the year where you can expect blue sky and 25 degrees during the day (the locals will tell you that you should have come when it wasn't so cold, haha).

Plaza de la Constitucion is a must see (2nd largest square in the world, behind Red Sq, Moscow).

Will you be driving? Mind the speed humps on the 100 km/h highways

I think there's always trouble somewhere in Mehico. Recently, there was some sort of uprising in Oaxaca that was international news. I think the place is generally safe unless you join in any government protests, become a member of a coke smuggling ring, or forget to brush your teeth every night.

Planning on Teotihuacan, thanks! Should be a highlight.

No driving at this stage, but have thought about geting a car in MC and dropping it in Cancun, or Merida. Not sure if that's possible. Could always buy a car I suppose...

Puerta escondido Is kinda nice and I've heard good things of the beach about 20km south of there although I forget the name.
I liked oaxaca when I was there it was just a sleepy little town with no problems
Oh yeah mexico city will be pretty cold at night!

Hi Kennas,

Join Somersoft (free), go to coffee lounge forum and post your question. The moderator is married to a Mexican lady, he has spent a lot of time in Mexico.

Actually, remember the thread about holiday pictures? The sunrise picture I posted was taken at San Felipe, Mexico (Baja)

I was there last year for a month.

Visited:

Mexico City: Teotihacan, Main plaza, general stuff in mexico city

Spent a few days in San lucas/los cabo (BAJA) pretty cool, but full of Americans.

Playa del Carmen

Tulum: Another amazing ruins near Playa Del Carmen... Just picturesque views etc. Well worth a visit..Also went to underground caves and went snorkling near tulum...

Merida: they have these awesome cenotes outside of the main city. You get a cart pulled along by a horse for a few miles on old railway trucks.. pretty dodgy, but the experience is amazing. Then you reach these cenotes in the middle of nowhere. get to swim in beautiful clean, cold blue water..

Oaxaca: Monte Alban (Cool ruins), TULE (a HUGE tree, sounds boring, but actually very impressive), Went to a Mezcal factory to see how they made the drink.

Palanque: Visited Aqua Azul & Miso Ha(Awesome waterfalls, can go swimming, Predator was partly filmed there), Yaxchilan ruins (Get a boat along the Guatemala and mexican border, these amazing ruins in the jungle)

San Cristobel: Amazing town, beautiful buildings and architechture, Canyon Del Sumidero

I loved the place.. Wish i could go back there... Will one day.

All the best

Spent 4 months surfing down the west side of the main land (not Baja) in 87 had the best waves but must admit Guatemala was the best place to hang out much more friendlier

Focus

Thanks everyone so far for your tips....

The best advice so far has been the cheap drugs and prostitutes in Tijuana.....

I have asked Rach if she wants to divert out trip up there, and she is thinking about it......

I'm not sure if it's the drugs or the prostitutes she is keen on. Will let you know.

Sounds like you need to marry that one Just make sure you dont bring home any venereal diseases

I am in absolutley no state to say that I am leaving in the morning, so I will say good bye now, until ron. All the best. Kennas!!!!

If you do anything stupid like urinate on an ATM and get caught by the police and they ask for your watch just give it to them because if they haul you down to jail, which they will, they will take it anyway... Just a tip

You don't want to go to jail because you'll be with twenty other inmates and if you're pretty, your backside will be passed around like a piece pipe

Mexico ´s going OK. Haven ´t been robbed yet. I ´ll be keeping the blog updated if anyone wants to see where I am.

Just one day away and NCM gets smashed....... Should have shorted it under $24.00.

Looks like I ´ll be travelling cattle class for the rest of the trip! LOL.
