Meat prices soar in supermarkets

Look on the bright side, deflation is not a fear at the moment. "But Mr Weeks believes there has been a surge in demand for some meat products because people are tightening their belts and turning away from restaurants, choosing instead to buy their meat from the supermarket and cook at home."

Obviously Mr Weeks does not understand the concept very well. If you are going to a restaurant, and you feel like meat, you will probably buy the same meat there.... It would mostly be supplier based increases I think.

Like your thinking, Wysiwyg, I'll have to compare it to seafood prices, otherwise will drop a line into the harbour, to catch dinner during my lunch time. Quite a relaxing activity. How often do they check permits ?

Man vs Wild is on tonight ... may get some ideas on some alternatives. There were some crows and pigeons around my place earlier ... also some lizards. Also saw a beware kangaroo sign on the road, not far from my place ... so they must be there.

Sambal adds quite abit of flavour and spice to everything.

Will have to either go Mediterranean diet for a while or chicken, until prices go down, and my freezer supply ends.

Dont buy mat at a supermarket, simple.

We buy from a butcher and can get premium scotch fillet steak for $10 per kg, providing we buy more than 2 kg at once. In the supermarkets ****ty rump steak is like $15 per kg. Scotch Fillet is the only type of steak we eat now...its a tough life :D

Do Not buy any Fruit & Veg from a supermarket either
unless it is Independently owned (ie Foodland in SA ) and
they buy from the markets themselves !

being an ex wholesaler and retailer i could go on for hours
but do yourselves, families and wallets a big favour
buy from a greengrocer or a good supermarket , at least it will be FRESH
and will have nutritional benefit

my 2:2twocents worth

Come on mate, share some more ... I'm a foodie - love's to cook, so good meat, veges and also fruit are very important to me.

Not sure where I can find a wholesale butcher as mentioned in the previous posts (damn and envy), but at least there is a good fruit/vege seller near my place ... so don't mind driving my business more there.

Although I still buy the mixed pre-washed baby spinach and rocket packets which goes nice in salads from the supermarkets ... are these ok?

Yes Dave

they are all prepared in HACCP approved premises
for food safety etc

cheers

Bugger, in Sydney ... love Perth mind you, 'Fremantle Doctor' shortening the flight and 'quokka soccer' ... j/j ... just an amazing and beautiful place.

LOL yeah perth great to visit thats why i live in geraldton :D 400 clicks north

Anyone know of cheap places to buy meat in South East Melb?

Was buying from a "wholesale" place in Chelsea Heights until they kept slowly jacking up their prices, only $1 per KG cheaper than supermarket now, not even worth the trip.

Perhaps it depends where you are. Where we live all the supermarkets offer fruit and vegetables hugely superior to any independent outlet.

When Woolworths announced their results a few weeks ago their CEO commented on this very point. Since the GFC Woolworths sales of higher quality fresh foods has increased markedly, the reason being offered that people are indeed eating at home more than they are going out.
