Hi. I'm new here & new to trading. Just wanted to find out if there is any kind of charting or data software that could pick recently moving stocks.

There is a lot of software on the market. I use amibroker, the price is good and the support is first class. Their address is www.amibroker.com.

The only other product I know of is Metastock which would have to be about the most popular product but much more expensive that amibroker.

MIT

Note that I have no affiliation with either product

There are a number of different ones out there. Some on this forum use Incredible Charts at www.incrediblecharts.com or another useful site is www.bigcharts.com {make sure your stock codes are prefixed with au: }. Before you go into charting, make sure you understand what you're doing and what you're looking at. Good luck.

So metastock is OK then?

Does anyone know where/how much to download unpdated market data each day?

Go to Fcharts, They have a free software program & show you how to import free data to it.
Try out the free stuff first before you buy. :)
Good luck Bob.

It is important to actually get software to suit what you need. Metastuck and Amibroker as well as a number of other software are very flexible in that you can create your own indicators and systems and backtest these. The downside of flexibility and power of programs is that you need to learn more to fully utiltise this power. Even these more powerful packages can be used for the simpler end of the TA spectrum by just displaying the built-in (or ready made) indicators.
If all you want is to look at a price chart, then look for the cheapest you can find, the all should display a price chart at least. In fact there are online charts you can view for free (eg incrediblecahrts).
Do not expect to buy a program and be able to utilise the full power of it without the required level of learning to go with it.

If you really want a good selection and reviews of free software search these forums for 'free software/charting' or the like.

btw, fibvortex is just spruiking his forex stuff so don't bother clicking through.

It's free from http://www.float.com.au, but the down-side is the data is not automatically adjusted for splits, etc.

It's what I use, but you have to be a little careful of backtest results if some of the trades cover split or consolidation periods. A 1 for 10 consolidation that makes the price go from 5 cents to 50 cents looks like a really good gain to the backtester :D
