my favourite eddie memory -

92 afl grand final - its time on in the last qtr and eddie, in his role as chief sports reporter for ch. 10 is on the ground near the west coast tunnel, waiting for the siren.
just then, some wag (me) yells out "hey eddie, why dont ya get yaself a REAL JOB" - little was i to know he'd be at ch. 9 only a few months later - funny how life changes.

Yeah Eddie's pretty good- they should give him the gold logie. Shame about that arial ping-pong business he spruiks about all the time though .

He will get burnt like. Did he even play footy?

I just think fast eddie is a talker and have no time for him or his crappass tv station

Now that Eddie is running Channel Nine one can only hope that someone from the NRL is also headhunted for a suitable position - perhaps cleaning the bins.

Don't worry about Ed. He'll make a good go of it.

I reckon John Sammy Newman will be positioning himself for Head Executive.

Is he really that qualified to run Channel nine??

hmm good question, i mean usually CEOs are chosen externally from no2s of other similar companies or have risen through the ranks...

i dunno if he even has an MBA...

has he run other companies before? Besides Collingwood i mean...

No - he studied journalism in Melbourne at RMIT but dropped out in the first year after he was approached by Channel 10 for full time sports position.

He has had mixed success on the business field - since becoming president of Collingwood he has turned the Magpies from being a basketcase off the field with revenue of $14M to projected revenue in 2006 of $43M. (Still basketcases on the field).

However his foray into an a football internet company project with Steve Vizard wound up earlier this year with losses of approximately $300K.

Those people north of the Murray have very little exposure to Eddie other than special events and "WWTBAMillionaire".

Eddie is extremely charismatic, very ambitious, extremely marketable, knows the value of a dollar, is brilliant at networking and is a born leader. Of course Eddie didn't handedly turn around the Collingwood football club - but he oversaw it. He drew the quality people necessary to get the job done.

In Melbourne he is the closest thing to royalty. I think it will prove an inspired decision - at least until they sack him.

The only person in AFl with more vision, drive and ability to do a better job than Ed would be Kevin Sheedy - and he will be too busy this year winning a premiership.

up the pies!!!

Morning everyone

I think Eddie is ok and has obviously done very well for himself from very humble beginnings. He certainly wasn't born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth and has worked very hard to get where he is now. If anyone is interested in his background ring up Ch9 and ask for a copy of "This Is Your Life" when they did Eddie....I wish him all the best

The only negative I see in Eddie is that he can go a little 'silly' when he puts his Collingwood hat on and it's a shame that is the only hat he won't be relinquishing

Go Eddie...!!!...

I agree with you Bullmarket. I like the boy!!!

I thought his "This is your life" was a wonderful tribute to a man who is obviously highly respected by his peers and many others, in fact I have NEVER heard a wife (other than me) speak in such glowing terms of their husband. However I think he is suffering a little from the infamous "Tall Poppy Syndrome" and many people become jealous of his success particularly when there doesn't seem to be any scuttlebut to go with it.

I am in awe of his energy and drive and will miss him on WWTBAM (I bloody do!!) and I think he'll go a great job - if not they'll flick him and he'll move onto his next (successful) venture.

yes I agree with you Mumbank.

I'm sure at least some of the criticism he's copped over the years has been driven by envy.

cheers..

I LOVE EDDIE! Thrilled for him to have this opportunity, but will sadly miss him on the AFL footy show. He and Sam were a fantastic team, and the show will not ever be the same.
Any whispers if he's going to continue with the Collingwood job? Of it's only a matter of time?
