I'm off to Kazakistan for 3 to 4 weeks on the weekend to help a mate out.

Does anyone know anything much about the place.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Its all happened all of a sudden. Is that where Borat came from ??

Re: Kazakistan

Hit man, gg, off on another job.

Good luck.

Pack Tenge....

Kazakhstan, also Kazakstan (Kazakh: Қазақстан Qazaqstan, pronounced [ˈqɑzɑqstɑn]; Russian: Казахстан, Kazakhstán, Russian pronunciation: [kazəxˈstan]), officially the Republic of Kazakhstan, is a large country situated in Central Asia and, according to the Council of Europe, Eastern Europe. Ranked as the ninth largest country in the world as well as the world's largest landlocked country, it has a territory of 2,727,300 km ² (greater than Western Europe). It is bordered by Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and China. The country also borders on a significant part of the Caspian Sea.

Thanks mate,

Most of the airlines that travel there leave you with only the option of Turkish Airlines or Air Astana for the final sector.

I'd prefer if it wasn't my final sector.

Does anyone have any info on those airlines THY or KC's ability to

Take off safely
Fly safely
Land on the runway safely.

Many thanks

Re: Kazakistan

GG

You hit the nail on the head, its where Borat is from,

Here's what I learnt from that informative documentary

1. They are the number 1 exporter of potassium

2. Their country is the greatest in the world, all other countries are led by little girls

3. It is illegal for more than 5 women to gather together except for in brothel or grave yard

Thats about it

I recommend you watch Borat again and maybe the Rambo where he is in Afganistan (nearology)

Re: Kazakistan

I might pack my Borat mankini to blend in.

Seriously though.

The airlines, would you travel Turkish Airlines or Air Astana if you had the choice, I know its not a good choice, rather like that of winning a one on one dinner with the Ruddmeister or Al Gore.

Re: Kazakistan

i hear many planes fly there, but they are never heard of afterwards.

it was reported back in 1980's sometime that a plane landed safely, so 1 reported landing is confirmed.

i recommend taking a bus there myself, or a hay cart.

i would not be so concerned about getting there, i would worry more about how to get out.

Re: Kazakistan

I got no idea about those airlines, but if they are dodgier than Jetstar then i wouldn't use them. I hate the feeling of flying in old dodgy planes!

Re: Kazakistan

That is not funny Agentm.

I have a choice of the two.

He needs me there asap. Big problems.

Sorry agentm, this is serious mate, I know I've taken the piss out of you in the past but any info would be good.

Someone must have travelled on these airlines.

Re: Kazakistan

Don,t forget your mankini. it,s coming into summer over there

Re: Kazakistan

http://www.airline-safety-records.com/

i always research the airframe age and the airline before i fly

there are various websites that keep records of airframes that various carriers fly. i look for airframes that are not too old and look at safety records of the carrier..

but you need to chill out, if you this highly strung right now god help you later!!

Re: Kazakistan

thanks for that.

I thought Air Astana would be rs but it gets some very good reviews compared to Turkish Airlines.

I'll plan to bribe if delayed.

I think its inevitable there will be some delays.

I'll have to get a phrase book as well.

Time is short.

I'm unsure whether to watch Borat or Deadwood on DVD to get myself into the atmosphere of the place. Probably the latter.

Re: Kazakistan

its not far from where that air nz plane on charter went down last yr, all killed obviously, seemingly after a bit of dodgy maintance or not enough of it from that region. just pick a plane that looks like it glides well when the engines stop. and sit near the back of the thing, but im sure its nowhere as risky as ending up in a hole or underwater, sans credit cards etc.
not far from where that aussie girl got the acid and limb chop trick last yr too isnt it.
i guess i shouldnt joke about that one.

Re: Kazakistan

GG...I hope you come back safely (like any trip o/s). I read in the Courier Mail, say 6 months ago quite a write up on this country. Quite similar to ours in mineral content. Quite rich in minerals and energy. A lot of major companies going in there with investment now. An ex-partner in a major Brisbane law firm was over there helping these big international concerns with their contracts. Their comment (lawyer) was that when they got out to the country it was very rough (I think in relation to the standard of living they were commenting about). They said they were careful about safety, but apart from that, they were enjoying it (I'm sure they were being paid a fortune though - that always helps). Of course, always DYOR.

Re: Kazakistan

Thanks Grace,

You are very kind.

I'll be ok once I get there.

I managed to get a good deal on return fares from Townsville to Almaty for a smidgen under $11,000.

So I leave Townsville on Saturday afternoon and get in to Almaty at 2am on Monday, but I've been assured there probably will be delays on the last sector.
