Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the July 2018 stock tipping competition entry thread! :)

I'm starting the entry thread for the July competition early this month so everyone can get used to the new rule. As I'm sure most of you have noticed, the amount of posts in stock threads has declined considerably in recent times and the new competition rule is designed to directly address that issue.

After posting your entry and before the deadline for entries (i.e. midnight on the last day of the month) each entrant must post in the thread on that stock and provide either a general update (technical or fundamental) or a view on why you think the share price is going to increase in the short term. It's that simple. It can be as short as a couple of sentences or as long as you like. The only condition is that the posted content must be on topic and meaningful.

As I mentioned, the reason for the introduction of this rule is to increase the amount of posts in stock threads. I hope that those who regularly enter the competition and enjoy it will see this new rule as an opportunity to lend a hand and help out ASF. Without an increase in posts in stock threads (and forum activity generally except for the General Chat forum) it is likely that the stock competition will soon be unable to continue, which would be a real shame after almost 14 years of continuous operation.

Thank you all for your support.

If anyone has any questions about the new rule, please ask them in this thread. I am always happy to respond to any queries or concerns.

OK, now that I've gotten that out out the way, on with the July competition....

This month's competition is proudly sponsored by Pepperstone - The World's Leading Forex Broker.

Pepperstone is an Online Forex (FX) Trading Broker, providing traders across the globe with cutting edge forex trading technology to offer unmatched top tier liquidity, institutional grade spreads and the security of tight financial regulation. Pepperstone offers online forex trading through multiple forex trading platforms, including Metatrader 4, Webtrader and Apps for iPhone and Android.

A quick recap of the rules for those not familiar with them:

1. Each entrant may choose one ASX listed stock. Options, warrants and deferred settlement shares are not permitted.

2. Stocks with a price of less than $0.01 are ineligible for the competition, as are stocks that are currently suspended from trading.

3. After posting your entry and before the deadline for entries you must post in the forum thread on that stock providing either a general update or a view on why you think the share price is going to increase in the short term.

4. The winner is the entrant whose selected stock performs the best in percentage terms between July 1 and July 31.

5. The maximum number of entrants in the competition is 100.

The competition winner will receive $100. The second placegetter will win $50 and the third placegetter $25.

You have until midnight on Saturday, June 30 to enter. However, in practice, entries can be submitted until this thread is closed. No entries submitted after that can be accepted for any reason.

Please post your entries in this thread. Remember, once you have selected your stock, you CANNOT change it for any reason.

Best of luck to all entrants! :D

EVN thanks Joe.

As per rule changes am off to post in the EVN thread

Cheers Joe. The "S" is for stock commentary not social commentary huh? :roflmao:
I reckon the new change is a great idea. Once one heads to the thread of the chosen stock, the information (or lack thereof) on said stock thread can be very enlightening.

Originally yes, but it's been hard to tell recently. ;)

Thanks. What motivated me to add the new rule was a while ago I noticed an unfamiliar stock that had been entered in the competition, but when I went to the thread on that stock there hadn't been a post about it in a few years. So I thought to myself, "Someone has noticed this stock and has formed an opinion about it, but hasn't posted in the thread about it. Why?"

That's when I realised that we had a big problem and I needed to implement strategies to help turn things around. The stock competition seemed like a good place to start because at least I know that people are following stocks here. Posts in stock threads really do matter. More than most people probably realise. Even if it's just a quick update. Just do it! :)

Pinning my hopes on JAT

Caveman, please note the new rule as set out in the first post. No need to post in the JAT thread immediately, just before the end of the month if you could. Thanks!

CXO thanks Joe...

Just one thing. When a company releases an announcement do we have the capability of it getting posted in the relevant stock thread automatically like we do with floats or name changes?

Multiple anns get released every day and this would "S" things up quite nicely :)

Unfortunately we don't currently have this capability, although it's something that I have thought about before. It would need to be an automatic process and I know that they do it over at HC but I'm not sure how well it would work here given our current circumstances. I think that there would be so many company announcement posts that we'd have one post from an ASF member for every 50 or 100 company announcements. It might be a bit overwhelming. :D You could limit it to only price sensitive announcements but you would still have a bucketload every day.

So in the short term we'll just have to rely on ASF's diligent contributors to update us about any company announcements of note that relate to stocks that they follow. I should point out to those entering the competition that even an update about a recent announcement in the thread of their chosen stock would be enough to qualify for the competition. My aim with the new rule is not to inconvenience anyone but to get more posts in stock threads. :)

Has everyone given up on the stock tipping competition because of the new rule? We've got hardly any entries and less than a week to go.

Feedback is welcome.

feedback...end of tax yr so dust still in the air for start point for me, you may even get some >$1 stocks this time......(retract that)

I'm going to take a punt on Golden Mile Resources in July. Will post in the G88 thread later today.

Hi Joe,

I was wondering if you could look at changing the hyperlink used in the competition page to take you to the stock thread in ASF (latest post) instead of Yahoo Finance?

Hopefully with the increased postings in this area this will then encourage some discussion.

Thanks

Hi Trav, thanks for the suggestion. I think it's a good idea and I will take a look and see if it is easy to implement. I would do just about anything to get more posts in stock threads.

DNK thanks Joe. The new concept sounds great and I have created a thread on DNK.

Thanks for your support and the post on DNK. I noticed there was another DNK thread so I have merged the two together.

SFI once again Joe.
My hunch is a probable take over with NSW Government has put some trust on this.
I also have put skin on this as a pure gamble and incurred some 40% loss since put the dice :) :) :)

I'm a little stunned by the lack of entries for the July competition. We usually get 30+ entries a month but this month we don't even have 10 so far. I've decided that if we cannot muster at least 20 entries for any particular month, then the competition for that month will not proceed. It needs a reasonable amount of entries to make it interesting.

So if you would like to see the July competition go ahead, please don't forget to get your entry in.
