I have met the man and listened to him speak and he's a great bloke. Would probably buy a pie for him at the footy!

Alas, he's on the chopping block of the Australian media and those with vested interest in making headlines and getting their own stooge into the hot seat of oppposition.

Far be it for me to assume that the Smirker is behind any subterfuge.

Unfortunately, he's an Essendon supporter so I think the Abbott (sorry how many b's and t's?) and Costello freak show is a real possibility going in to the next presidential election...

The Libs are a farce. There are no shining lights or white knights on the horizon. Just faded roses from days gone by. It's a sad, sorry sight to see their plight in Victoria, WA, Qld and NSW...... let alone federally.

Forget Costello. Like Bert Newton, he was only ever cut out to be a second banana. Howard knew it better than anyone.

Turnbull is the only one with a backbone, but is struggling to win majority support. His strategy appears one of waiting until everyone else falls over. What he desperately lacks is a fresh-faced, competent, trustworthy and articulate deputy/shadow Treasurer. As yet no-one has emerged. It aint Joe Hockey either

yeh had howard given leadership to costello , liberals would have faired better..

the man had some good policies too on the economic front especially with self managed super (whats the bet labour screws that up now)

ok John baby, - but perhaps his balls contained more intelligent tadpoles than yours did - sheesh.

For once (fist time probably) I (think) I agreed with Andrew Bolt on Insiders this morning - that Costello probably didn't have the numbers, and would have lost a challenge, had he made one back a year or 18 months ago - (then ago who knows).

PS I really enjoyed Malcolm Farr pulling Bolt up on a major point - Bolt insisting that India and China make more CO2 than we do, but decling to answer Farr's question that when that is converted to "per capita" we swamp em. Bolt is (generally) full of it, for mine.
 

yeh but per capita who cares really when u weigh it up theres still a major difference.... thats like have 2 billion in one country and 10 in another and saying wait wait wait they are the bad guys, look at the per capita

2 Germans , Norwegians, or Danes or
3 French, Argentinians, or
4 Portugese,
6 Chinese or
12 Indians or
25 Africans (?) etc etc

Per capita is bit tricky way to argue the case.

But I would hate to live in a city that only 2 weeks of Olympic games are going to give me breathable air.

It is immaterial if Costello returns to lead the liberal party or not.

Point is if Liberal party has the support of mass to win the election ? IMO - NOT IN THE COMING ELECTION completing Rudd's first term

Point is if Liberal Party will support Costello to become its undisputed leader - most probably with inside dog fighting within liberal - the answer will no

Point is if Turnbull will pose a challenge - IMO Yes, by tooth and nail. He has given a close scare already to Nelson and with the incompetency of Nelson, in a divided party, lack of leadership unfortunately Turnbull's chances are only better.

I am a realistic and not a great fan of Rudd either. But the choice is between two sides just like Obama and Mc Cain= both are useless so take the lesser evils . If we 22 Million failed to produce a good leader after John Howard - we deserve one of the rejected lots any way

Smell of politics is interesting - I have been advised politics is the last topic Australians will like to discuss. I think the situation has changed since this was written some 30 years back

In an attempt to return this one to the topic at hand, Andrew Bolt made the essential point (as 2020 has already mentioned) that at no stage did Costello have the numbers during John Howard's reign.

So John Hewson's comment is really rather silly and just exacerbates the sense that the Libs are doing their quarrelling in public - never a good look.

The situation re the Liberal leadership is now entirely different from that when John Howard was PM. When faced with the current crop of candidates, i.e. Nelson, Turnbull, ????anyone else?, then Costello starts to look pretty damn good.

Gee, if he does make a come back, just imagine how big the smirk will be by then!

Andrew Bolt made a number of interesting comments the other morning.

The first one, as mentioned about the incorrect comment from John Hewson.

Does Hewson have any "credibility factor" left? No wonder Climate Control is such a huge issue for Politicians because the haze down in Canberra must be unbearable. It is amazing how much clearer people see things about their own time in Canberra after they leave. He's a bitter, bitter man and almost as irrelevant to be a Coalition commentator as Malcolm Fraser!!

For Bolt's second observation - what is the media beatup about the Coalition's emission policy? More airtime is being given to the position of the Opposition than the Governments!! And did you notice Malcolm's comment back to Andrew: "At least the Government has a position". What the?? Doesn't policy content matter??

Julia, we will have to agree to disagree with Costello. I think he is a fine parlimentary performer who would do a good job in office.

The Liberal leadership after the election defeat was always going to be a poison chalice. Costello was damed clever to get right the #### away from any possibility of being opposition leader at tis time.

He set up Alexander Downer in exactly the same way.

Peter is smart and his day will come... and he will make a fine PM.

At the moment, it is still a chalice full of cyanide.

I must have created the wrong impression re my feelings about Costello.
I'd welcome him back and think he's the only choice at present for Leader.
And yes, he's a brilliant parliamentary performer who could take the fight up to Rudd & Co in a fashion not contemplated by any of the present Libs on the front bench.

I just think he's been somewhat disingenuous and self-serving (no surprise there, he's a politician, after all) by throwing a bit of a wobbly and refusing the leadership after the election was lost, withdrawing to the back bench, and now being apparently more concerned about the success of his forthcoming book than the health of the Liberal Party. I suppose he feels hard done by with respect to John Howard, and is enjoying a certain revenge.

All understandable, I guess, but possibly less than statesman-like.

All that said, I'd welcome him as Leader.

Btw, can you imagine the private conversations and thoughts of Malcolm Turnbull? Here he has been holding himself back, watching while Brendan Nelson digs himself ever into a greater mess, ably assisted by the media, just waiting to take over, and then out from the shadows comes the erstwhile Treasurer, just to pip Malcolm at the post!
