Investors' Seven Deadly Sins

Julia,

Another thread worth debating.

Looking at the 7 sins in life and applying them to investing or trading is an interesting exercise. I am interested what people think of the 7 sins. There may be some revelations for people when they think about it.

Gluttony
Greed
Pride
etc.

Snake:

What are the others? I've forgotten. Avarice is one. We've already given "Pride" a fair dissection on the "Money" thread. I'm having somewhat of a difficulty relating "Gluttony" to investing/trading. My interpretation of the word relates purely to food. If the rapidly increasing rate of obesity is anything to judge by, then a lot of people are guilty of this sin!
Sorry, didn't mean to get off track.

I dare say anyone could succeed at anything if they did things just so with none of the above issues to distract them.

Hmm. I wonder how long ago these deadly sins were dictated?

For some of them I could make some sort of a case for them being positive attributes. e.g.
Avarice: Doesn't this go with Envy? Of themselves, yes they are undesirable characteristics. However, taken as a spur to motivation for self improvement, couldn't they be considered positive characteristics?
i.e. if Bob envies Jack his comfortable situation, could that envy not be an impetus for Bob to get motivated towards making a genuine effort to be more like Jack?

Pride: we've already discussed this in the Money thread. Pride has a lot of connection with Ego and insecurity.

Sloth: for those of us who are constantly "driven" and always feeling compelled to be "doing" and "progressing", sloth is something to be aspired to imo. Often in a competitive world (possibly absorbed by avarice and envy above) we can find it difficult to relax. Hence my proposition that Sloth can in certain circumstances be desirable.
That's not to say all the lazy dopes out there can latch onto the above as an excuse for just doing nothing all their lives.

Lust: perhaps I'll leave this alone. Just can't help thinking how dull it would be without it.

Anger: this can be a lot more constructive if reasonably expressed than if it is suppressed, ultimately leading to all sorts of subversive hostility which can affect many different relationships.
Again, this above should not be construed as saying it's OK to go off like a rocket at the slightest provocation.

The above suggestions are partly genuinely felt and partly tongue in cheek in the hope of provoking further discussion, which I hope is what you were looking for Snake.

Obviously no-one on this thread saw the movie se7en! It is one dark movie - each of the 7 sins is re-enacted as a murder! Brad Pitt stars. Not one to enjoy but maybe worth a look if you are in to that sort of thing!
