Hundreds of cardboard houses have been built in the centre of Sydney to raise support for Australia's homeless.

Workers from Mission Australia and realestate.com.au constructed the cardboard city on Martin Place early on Thursday morning as part of a new donation drive that, rather than asking for money, simply requires people to visit a website.

For every person who visits housesforthehomeless.com.au Australia's largest realty website, realestate.com.au, will donate one dollar to Mission Australia.

Yes, it really is a great idea.

Does this let the government off the hook?

Wow. So I guess you believe that freewill is paramount and we all have complete choice over all of actions; whatever happens to us we are responsible for; and of course, society has no responsibility to care for each other.

Get a grip mr.male heterosexual middle aged worker and show some compassion

All of us need help at stages during our lives.

From the babe in arms
To the rebellious youth that have destructive tendencies
To the middle ages where direction and meaning in life shows depression is more common than let known.
To the elderly who are frail of limb.
To the mentally ill who cannot control their actions
To the physically disabled who need a gentle loving hand up toward a better quality of life.

So I guess on the ABS forms every 5 years under occupation they would put "homeless" and income would be "undisclosed" because they are obviously part of "elite society" who have offshore bank accounts to support their profession...

The example of one viewed from a distance does not consititute the majority. Speak to someone who is homeless one day - you may be surprised that they actually want the security of a job, a house, a life that is not a struggle for day to day existence. Volunteer at a soup kitchen; you live in st.kilda, help someone you see. Get rid of the victim mentality (you are not the victim) and open your eyes to the struggles some people face in their lives.

Robots.....your simplistic version of homelessness and unemployment is just a little unwelcome on a pretty well intentioned thread....

I'm sure you know as a male heterosexual middle aged worker, you understand that to have a job, you need to 'have your **** together', as in the basics of life like food and shelter.

Lots of people, through fault of their own and circumstance don't have the basics and 'getting a job' is actually what could be referred to as a 'high level activity'. If you researched homelessness, you may find the relationship between mental illness.......but you probably don't believe that exists either.

The whole culture of blaming the 'disadvantaged' is circular...just turn your head if you don't want to lend a hand cause they 'deserve what they have cause it's their fault'

At the end of the day, many fantastic Aussies lend a hand to people through fault of their own or not, are in the ****........Do you think these Aussies are making a positive or negative contribution to Australia and themselves?

One of the salvos, who do a great job, once told me that they do get a few freeloaders who do not deserve their help but said that they would sooner have that happen than miss one case that really needed help. Try giving charity sometime, you'll find it doesn't hurt a bit. In fact the satisfaction you get from helping someone is a reward well worth the cost.

my partner worked at the crisis centre for the "army" on grey st, st kilda for 3 yrs and prior to that for 3 yrs at Melbourne City Mission on Nicholson St, Footscray

I found with Charity Just give if you can afford it and don't question is the best option.... if everyone think like you there would be no charity, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett wouldn't give away their Billions.

Yes some of the money will be wasted some where and yes there are free loader but some of it will end up in the needy hand which is all that matter.

So hand on heart, your investment profits on the line, you really think that someone, who has swallowed their pride to get a food handout or is desparate enough to try and find "free" accommodation in the luxury and comfort of supported housing (with a wonderfully caring rabble of drug users, ex-cons, prostitutes and the like), wants to be there?

So please tell me the bollocks I am referring too. I find this line of "argument" (if you can call it that) very saddening in our affluent culture where the haves cannot recognise that there are havenots (despite the wealth of experience you have in this area).

Get off your soap box robots.
I agree with questionall.
robots, you make some valid points, but how about some balance by attacking the other end of the food chain (the capitalist pigs).

Talk about soapboxes...

OK you got me. But in my defense I must say robots posted three (3) derogatory comments against the homeless (defenseless without computer internet access). I only made one rebuffing post (apart from this one) . Anyway whats your opinion on the issue ,docj?
