Hello everyone.
My name is Grant and I'm 23 and I'm wanting to learn to trade shares to help me later in life. I've been surfing around this forum for a few days and I've learnt a bit already.

A co-worker has been teaching me a little bit from what he knows, he doesn't know much but he got me off the ground on where to look and how to read the shares.

There are 2 shares I've been watching for about 6 months which are COE - Cooper Energy Limited and BPT - Beach Energy Limited. Both seem like they got a few new operations coming up from there announcements, but I might be wrong :p

There are a some things I'll like to know;
1: What is a good amount to start off with to trade? (I've got $2,000 I'm willing to use)

2: Should I use Commonwealth Bank "MyWealth" or CommSec to trade?

That's all I can think of for now but I know there will be more questions.
I'm hoping everyone will help me and teach a lot :)

1) I started out trading about $1000 per stock, but if I could go back - I would have spent far longer educating myself before I even started looking at companies. If you are paying ~$20 each way in brokerage you'd really not want to be buying parcels under ~$2k. Otherwise your transaction costs ensure that you need at least a decent movement in your direction just to get back to even....

2) Not familiar with MyWealth? But CommSec is a good place to start..has basic research functions and is user friendly...

My advice - keep educating yourself and don't jump in too quickly. Find a strategy (fundamental/techinal, buy&hold/swing etc etc)..look at a few styles and see what you might be suited too...

So long as your $20 transaction cost isn't eating up too much of each trade, then you're OK. I started off with $2000 parcel or higher, but it's completely up to you.

I would say CommSec, but I've never seen MyWealth TBH. Might have to check it out.

Assuming you're taking a longer term approach, then the broker you use isn't that critical. Just try and find one that is easy to use, has relatively low transaction costs and is reliable...

Agree with the $2K start number.

I use ANZ E Trade but Commsec seems to win all the awards. Probably can't go wrong either way.
