I have just seen Avatar. Whilst the storyline is fairly standard and predictable, it is a good yarn and I would have say say that this movie is right up there. The 3D effect is unbelievable. I even ducked a couple of times, and some of the scenes I felt as though I could just lean over the chair in front and touch it. Absolutely fantastic, and the futuristic science & technology concepts were mind blowing, not to mention the idea of the planet Pandora.

Good luck for the Oscars.
 
Absolute crap. Most overrated movie ever. I think for another movie to be this bad will be Unobtainable!

enjoyed it myself..

went to see it for what it was, a monster cgi film.. and had no problem liking it

anyone can critique a film, or storyline, there are very few original storylines in any case.. star wars is another example.. but they dont need complexity or clever scripts, just a fantasy escapism flick..
 

And that's pretty much what i thought of it...Avatar is not a masterpiece but it is an epic film that sets a new bench mark in 3D effects and digital animation....3D is a must see.

Avatar will win technical and production Oscars.
 
Loved the CGI and 3D, thought the creatures were awesome and the boilogical concept behind Pandora was nice.

When I saw the movie it was entirely predictable - but after seeing skyQuakes image containing the Pocahontas similarities it is a bit more than predictable.

Never-the-less worth seeing just for the eye candy.
 
Its all about the details in the behind the scenes stuff.

Cameron hired a linguist to create the language, a physist to create the atmosphere/gravity that would allow creatures to grow to that size/height and a botanist to design and name every plant.

Seeing the movie in 3D is like looking through a window. Unlike other 3d movies which jump out at you occasionally, this one is like looking in on anohter world. Truely fantastic and sets a new benchmark in movie standards if you ask me.
 
Yep, I loved it. Definitely a must to see it in 3D though. I liked the story line, sure it was predictable but most movies are.

Visuals were sensational, loved the 3D arrows pointing out the screen, and those little white floaty things, wanted to grab one The world and everything in it was superbly created.
 
Absolutely loved it, just enjoy the movie and ignore the comparisons.
besides there's this chick 10foot,slim,athletic c'mon what not to love.

 
I very rarely go to the cinema, but I had enough raving recommendations to convince me to see this one. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cringe when I heard the word "unobtainium" (seriously, unobtainium?) and thought I was in for something very lame, but I was surprised. The story was old and cliche, entirely predictable, but it was basically a visual movie, and on that level was thoroughly enjoyable. During the film I was often surprised that despite knowing exactly what was going to happen so far in advance, it still somehow seemed important, and almost real. I suppose it was just visually so good that they managed to pull off what I would have expected to come across as stale, boring and insultingly formulated to exploit the audience.

The floating mountains were almost sufficiently ridiculous to kill it, but I think they just scraped through. Great film, very enjoyable, but... seriously, unobtainium? Unobtainium?

Disturbingly, I now have friends in lust with Na'vi girls
 
I saw it last night after having rave reviews from many family and friends....many who said they would not usually go and see such a film but were very pleasantly surprised.

The skill of producing something like this just blows my mind....story line predictable but just something about it. If it doesnt win quite a number of awards i would be very surprised.

What was the budget for this movie?

Apparently people are getting Avatar-Depression or the Pandora-Blues where they become depressed when that they realise that the dream of Pandora is intangible and they are confined to their existence on Earth.

The beautiful alien planet Pandora depicted in James Cameron's 'Avatar' is so captivating that some audience members are becoming depressed and even suicidal when they fail to find meaning in real life after the film is over.

If they made Pandora into a MMORPG you could see people disappearing into there. WOW has this effect on some. Though once your home PC can generate CGI like this, MMO's will be consuming big chunks of the population. It may be a good way to entertain the unemployed?

haha.. Thats it Pochontas on steroids.
Special effects seem to lure the punters in these days.
Just look at our political figures... Rudd and Obama.. All glow and no show.
Now Gen Y are being casted along the same lines.
Presentation is 10 out of 10....substance 0 out of 10.
Its a trend across all industries... Its only a matter of time before it switches back... You can only cover up crap for so long until eventually the smell starts to take over.
