Had a bad experience this morning at a Telstra shop , was confronted by a bloke with a clipboard, they wanted my name before anyone would help me (was buying new mobile)

I resented this breach of the privacy act (I think) and declined by telling them to piss off and walked out.

Tried to find somewhere to complain on the Telstra site, no such luck, but found this site http://www.telstracomplaints.com/
and faxed Sol Trujillo direct.

Might be handy for some of you guys and a thread for useful sites might also be interesting.

Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman

www.tio.com.au

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman is a free and independent alternative dispute resolution scheme for small business and residential consumers in Australia with unresolved complaints about their telephone or internet services.

Is this really a breach of privacy act? He was asking for your name, not stealing your details or on-selling your phone number to anyone else. Fair enough, it might be bad sales tactics, but it's their problem if they want to drive customers away.

BTW, why didn't you just tell him your real name, Monty Burns...

Re: Handy web sites

He didnt just ask he insisted, it's the princple. Thats an invasion of privacy and I shouldn't have to lie to avoid it.

Hi Mr Burns,

Its probably some new law so that you can be tracked down, after using your phone purchased under your real name, new from the shop, to conduct your drug deals, terrorist activity and other criminal enterprises.

Same as if you want to withdraw $10k of your own money

Ha I sent the Telstra thing to Crikey and it's already pubished in their newsletter.

Re: Handy web sites

I think Sol might have bigger worries on his hands, such as that missing mobile phone in Barcelona.
Burnsy I take it you have never been forced to wear a name tag?

Never.

Re: Handy web sites

I kept getting over-charged for my new plan I started in November. Each time I was told to pay the amount on the bill (roughly double the price I should have paid) and it would be credited to my next bill. I rang their hotline, but was continuously "put through to another area", so I went into the store and kicked up a stink about it. They said they couldn't help with a billing issue, and that I had to call the billing department.

I sent an email describing what happened to their complaints office. I got a "copy and paste" response thanking me for my letter. WTF! I replied stating that I had contacted the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. For some reason they don't seem to like that.

In the end I was so sick of continuously wasting hours of my precious free time that I paid $1000 to get out of the contract, which is basically what it would have cost me to buy the phone outright (iPhone). Now I'm pre-paid, and I actually get a lot better value for money. For $50 I get 100MB data, 150mins of calls and 150 free SMS per month.
