What about all those 1000's of people who do use the phone/gps unit properly?

If they think banning a 'craddled' phone/gps will make the roads safer, then they should bloody well ban ALL GPS units - even the dash/window mounted dedicated GPS units.

Just mount your phone GPS to the dash / window, problem solved. Or, use voice recognition ... almost all phones have it.

Seriously, one would have to be blind, and or stupid - to not see that they're slowly phasing out the legalities of having a phone in the car. Too many idiots are always texting their mates in one hand, with their other on the wheel. Oh, and don't even get me started on women, I've seen them nearly drive onto the footpath whilst doing their bloody makeup

The bottom line? When you are driving in the car, focus on the road. Not the kids, not the phone, not the makeup - the road! Your bad day isn't an excuse for someone else to get killed

Even mounting the smartphone in a hands free cradle, as traditional portable sat-nav devices can be done, will not be enough to ‘get around’ the new law. Because the primary function of the device is a phone, it is illegal to operate it when in control of a vehicle.

Was living in Brisbane at the time and a mate and I were riding back from Mt Glorious when a guy nearly hit us as he changed lanes. He hadn't done a shoulder check or indicated. My mate was a little upset as I was. As it happened a few sets of lights later this guy is in the left lane stopped with window down still chatting on the phone.

Mate pulls up beside him, clicks his bike into neutral and snatched the phone out of car guy's hand and throws it with great force into the intersection for other cars to run over. I laughed so hard I stalled it at the lights..

BAck on subject, how often do people really use GPS in cars?

Don't you generally operate the GPS before you start moving, and just follow the directs afterwards. There really is no reason to be holding or touching the device whilst you are driving. Even standard stand alone GPS devices have a warning not to use them whilst driving...
