The big story in Ballarat has been the disappearance of a 51 Year old woman who went for her regular run through bush tracks 8 days ago. It's a horrible situation which first starts with concerns about injury, then possible abduction and then ...what ?

After 8 days not a sign of anything. No trace. Police are saying very little publicly.

Samantha leave behind three children and her husband. It seems as if she was a pillar of the community. No one quite knows what to make of the situation.

  • In short: Children of missing woman Samantha Murphy attend schools in the regional Victorian town.
  • Some parents say their children have been left feeling anxious and concerned by her unexplained disappearance.
  • What's next? Community members are continuing to search bushland areas while police have reduced their search resources.

Very sad and puzzling. Hopefully the truth will come out eventually.

Maybe she disappeared of her own accord, or maybe she didn't.

Originally they said she went one way and the next day they said she went the opposite way, so what I find odd is why wasn't a tracker dog used the first day.

She was on foot, so there must have been a scent trail that a tracker dog could follow to the bushland area.

Seems weird to me that 1000 people tramp all over the scent trails before a dog was used.

Very weird now that the scent is probably cold.

Samantha Murphy's disappearance 'suspicious', says Victoria's Chief Commissioner Shane Patton

Just done a fencing quote for a senior police officer locally.
He did a fair stint in the North West.
Got yakking to him about the missing lady over East.
Down a shaft was his quick replay.
These old shafts hold many secrets.

Assuming she has not left by choice then I agree, a mine shaft is likely.

Many of them are relatively shallow because of land slips etc so a cadaver dog may well get a scent if used soon.

Getting a bit long on the waiting time to use what should have been brought in days ago, I reckon.

I am too much of a student of true crime stories not to have an opinion on this particular case.

Firstly, a healthy adult who is not involved in underworld activities has a better chance of being struck by lightning than be abducted off the street by strangers in broad daylight in middle class suburbia. This theory doesn't make any sense to me. She would have screamed and fought any would-be abductors. Someone would have heard or seen something.

The Anita Cobby case was one of those rare cases where a person was abducted by complete strangers and murdered. However, in cases where this does occur the body is dumped quickly, usually within a day. This woman has been missing for more than two weeks. Rapists and murderers just don't keep bodies, nor do they go to a lot of trouble disposing of them. They usually just dump them in isolated areas or bury them in shallow graves.

Other cases similar to this one in any number of countries have almost always been resolved with the arrest and conviction of someone very close to the victim. The police will be looking very closely at motive and opportunity. It will take some digging but eventually previously unknown information will come to light that will give the investigators something to go on.

The perpetrator in this case will be a person the woman knows and trusts.

my partner's antennae went up at the press conference appeal for information had a few close family looking rather unconcerned.

Going back a few years ago here in WA a bloke just "disappeared" for quite some time. When he surfaced, he just wanted out and away from his wife. Never heard anything after that.
