It is now time for our Governor General , Ms. Quentin Bryce, to publicly declare herself ineligible to decide on our future Federal Government.

She is seriously conflicted in having to make a decision as to which party commands the Government benches in the Federal Parliament, due to Bill Shorten, a probable future leader of the Labor Party, being her son-in law.

Let us not have a repeat of 1975 when a decision of the then Governor General led to so much division in our nation.

I have forwarded a copy of this post to her Majesty the Queen.

Should Ms.Bryce not relinquish any part in these events, well may we say "God save the Queen", because nothing will save the Governor-General.

Isn't it fairly unlikely that Ms Bryce will be called upon to make any decision?
She would only have to do this should the parties find themselves unable to reach an agreement.

All the contenders, both the major parties, plus the independents and the Green member, seem convinced they can get to an agreed outcome.

I reckon Labor in particular will be keen to do this simply to avoid all the snide remarks that would inevitably be made about Bill Shorten's relationship with Ms Bryce. I bet the Bryce and Shorten families are now rather now regretting that politically incestuous union.

However, although all parties are full of kindness and goodwill toward one another at this stage, this may not last once they actually start the horse trading. Should be fun to watch.
The first thing the Coalition should do is banish Barnaby Joyce to Lake Eyre or some other far flung location. If he's allowed to open his mouth, he will stuff up any potential relationship between the Independents and the Coalition.
Tony Windsor has said outright that he considers Barnaby is "a fool".

A reliable contact of mine in Canberra tells me that the ole Quentin has taken my concerns on board and has an appointment at the ACT Pro Bono Clearing House(ACT Law Society) at 11am this morning.

Seemingly this is where you go before you head for Legal Aid in the ACT, as there are so many folk in Canberra seeking free legal advice, you have to go to the Clearing House first. Its kinda like a Purgatory before Hell..

Why do people always do momentous things like this at 11am. Why not 12.45 or 2.35.

And, while we are at it, why did her folks call her Quentin?

Mr. Gageler, a solicitor, has made a decision that the Governor General Ms.Bryce would not be compromised if she were asked to advise on the makeup of our government, should this be necessary.

This must be the first time a legal person has been asked to adjudicate on a decision of ethics. ( a somewhat vaudevillian scenario to be honest, law deciding on ethics )

Ethically she is severely compromised and perhaps a committee of senior ethicists should be convened to decide on this important matter.

She will be either consciously or unconsciously influenced by her relationship to her son-in-law Bill Shorten, a Labor Party powerbroker and decider of Prime Ministers himself in the not too distant past.

It would be proper now for her to disqualify herself from these matters, before she compromises the position of Governor General as did Sir John Kerr in 1975.

However, I don't think she would want to lose her high profile position and certainly wouldn't want the associated humility that would come her way if the ice crumbles.

At this stage, she doesn't need to step in and maybe she will review her legal standing should any intervention favouring labor be required.

I suspect you are correct, sails, I would find it hard to believe that she would be that stupid.

However, our betters, are not showing much nouse, atm, so anything is possible.

I never realised he was a pollie, I thought he was some suburban Canberra solicitor, ash on his trousers, driving a Hyundai, situated just down the road from the Lodge, that Ms.Bryce popped in to on her way to wherever Governor-Generals go to of a Wednesday afternoon.

We really should get rid of these anachronistic figureheads and have a President on the Eire model.

Stephen Gageler is the Solicitor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. He was appointed by the Rudd govt. in March this year, and before that he was a Senior Counsel on the NSW bar. He's the lawyer who "cleared John Howard over his use of Kirribilli House for a private party", and his specialty is constitutional law.

I'm wondering if I'm being peculiar in feeling that we're at an almost farcical stage with all this, i.e. the grandiosity of the three Independents who seem to be taking the view that their position entitles them to completely change the way the country is to be run in future, and Ms Gillard's obsequious determination to give them whatever they want in her desperation to save her career.

Then today we have the image of Andrew Wilkie courageously saying that he will not necessarily give his support to either side, then just a few short hours later, urging the three other Independents to make up their mind quickly regarding with whom they will align themselves, so that the business of government may be got on with!

These non-party-aligned blokes seem to be getting more than a little carried away with themselves, but obviously no one is prepared to do other than pander to them.

If the GG is biased towards the Labor Party to form Government, for what ever reason that may be, she will lose her credibility among the conservatives.

If she favours the Coalition, she will no doubt be on the outter circle of the Labor power brokers.

Guess she now finds herself in a very sticky situation. Her safest bet would be to let a collective group of state Governors come to a unanimous decision.

The Governor of NSW , I believe is next senior to make a decision if the parties are unable to agree.

She would appear to be conflicted to me, and I see myself as being an average Australian voter.

I'm not sure that she is a former Labor activist. My impression was that she hid her political leanings pretty well.

I'm a Republican, so do not go into the intricacies of Royal puppets' politics.

I hasten to add that HM is a nice gal with whom to have drinks. Phil the Greek, though, is a bit of an embarrassment at the best of times.

TAXPAYERS paid a massive $700,000 for Governor-General Quentin Bryce's trek to Africa to help win Australia a seat on the UN Security Council.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the spending blowout included nearly $300,000 paid to diplomats and Government officials to organise the 18-day odyssey in March and April.

Ms Bryce - criticised over her lobbying for the Rudd Government - spent a further $64,000 on food, accommodation and gifts during the 10-country visit.

Flying Ms Bryce and her entourage to Africa on the Government's VIP aircraft cost at least $350,000.

The revelations plunged the Governor-General into further controversy just days after Parliament was told Ms Bryce had lost 30 of 85 staff since her appointment a year ago.

I take your point Calliope about the Africa trip, it reminds one a bit of Vince Gair.

However, I am unaware that she was an out of the closet Labor hack prior to being made GG. It is my belief that she has never declared her politics.

She was certainly in the "Rudd for next Sec General of UN " camp. that's why she went to l'Afrique. but I think you would agree that being for Rudd does not make her a Labor hack, particularly at this moment in our history.

Poor ole Quentin. She's up to her nose in it now. Best for her to disqualify herself, if she needs to decide our next Government.

You are assuming that Rudd would have appointed an unpopular Queensland Governor (who was a Labor appointee there) as GG without knowing her political leanings. She might not have been a Labor hack, but she certainly became Rudd's lackey.

I am an old DLP/Santamaria activist, and we have long memories , and still have deep throat info on all present public figures both in the ALP and Coalition, and Independents for what its worth.

Nowhere in my data can I find any definitive evidence that Quentin Bryce is a Labor hack.
