Well the new year ticked over but no extra channels on tv.
The decision to get pay tv or not wont be made until i know whats on offer on free to air.
Any info on what we may get?-a dedicated sports channel would be nice.
Or is regurgitated programs we already see.
Any info on the startup date?

Right now all I can see is STAY TUNED adds for start of extra channels.

We have most of those at the moment dont we, with a digital set top box I get ABC 1 and 2, SBS 1 and 2, CH7 and 70, CH9 and 90 and Ten and Ten HD.

The only downside apart from ABC and SBS is that at night each channel pair has the same programs, during the day though 7 and Ten do have different programs on their seperate channels and 9 has a continous promo on its HD channel.

ABC 2 is great, had an episode of 'Father Ted' on the other night

channel 10 have committed theirs to being a 24 hr sports channel
7 and 10 have not released details of their programing yet but each will probably be a dedicated channel

That's all about to change...they were forced to have duplicate programing
up till end of 08..now they can have different programing on there second
channel and an extra channel i think.

So this is basically 3 extra channels, numbers 1/12, 77 and 99, compared to what I get now with ordinary digital TV?

Or if there's actually some significant programming on them then 70 and 90 would be extras as well for me. I'm not sure about the rest of the country, but here they just show scenery most of the time on the HD versions of Win (effectively Channel 9) and Southern Cross (effectively Channel 7).

32" LED TV purchase coming up, any major do's and dont's. I'm told the brand order is something like Sony, LG, Samsung Toshiba, then the rest for LCD/LED TV's. Another thing I noticed is how much the power consumption jumps up with selected screen size.

With warranties, I'm not clear on expected service life for this kind of product, I do know LCD computer screens last very well.

If long term durability is your concern then personally I'd steer well clear of LG.

LG is just the old Goldstar re-branded. Some will say they've improved but I'm not at all convinced on that one and have heard mixed reports from owners of such items.

As for the others, Sony has a more mixed reputation than you might realise. Quality performance certainly, but many of their products have a reputation for being effectively unrepairable once the warranty's up.

Back in the days of CRT's, I saw quite a few professional situations using numerous monitors (control rooms etc) and they were always Panasonic or Sony. More recently, I've seen Samsung LCD displays used in the same applications, and Mitsubishi for the large multi-panel video walls. I'm no expert on them, but that's what the professional users seem to be buying.

Consumer equipment isn't built to the same standards as professional, but generally speaking you don't find the a company producing absolute rubbish for consumers if they have a reputation to protect in the professional market.

The show rooms set up TV's with the best Bluray DVD etc to make it all look good, ask the sales person to put the TV you like on a local channel and see the picture also the room is lit in a way to make the picture look good what you see may not be as good in your bedroom.

32" LED TV purchase coming up,

I own a 32 inch Samsung LCD TV, it is 4 years old and they are still selling them. The warranty is 3 years but I extended it to 5. So far no breakdowns.

The screen is very clear and all in all not bad. However if you plan to only use the speakers that are inbuilt to the TV then I would suggest perhaps another brand, the quality in the sound isn't quite right, slight distortion at higher than normal volumes.

Samsung is considered to be the best middle of the road TV & monitor Brand, i got a mid sized Samsung Plasma (low end HD) about 6 months ago for some thing like $700 bucks..TV's should really be considered to be "throw away" items IMO, buy a goodish cheap older model (run out) and simply replace or move to a bedroom every 3 or 4 years as better models get cheap.

Freeview and my cheap TV are great, so many channels to choose from and the TV has a USB slot so you can hook up a 500 Gig portable HDD to it and play movie's and other computerised content straight off the drive..i use cheapo 8 gig USB sticks, usually get about 5 to 7 hours of entertainment on one and its just so easy.

Really appreciate the the help folks.

I took your collective advice and walked straight to a Samsung 32" LED with USB that I can get as a $600 run out model. I asked the store to turn up the sound, nothing to write home about, but for DVD's I'll use audio out and run the sound through the stereo.

There was a directly equivalent LG model there, it looked good to me, but to his credit, the salesman made it fairly obvious which one he thought was best.
