Foot and Mouth Disease will adversely affect Australia, particularly the Agricultural Sector and the AUD should it manage to get in to our herds.

The biggest danger atm. are Bogans returning from Bali with McDonalds meals and those Grannies and Grandads who one sees on Border Security, ( a program on the televisions for those unaware ) who miraculously lose their comprehension of English when apprehended with last weeks leftovers on returning from visits to our cousins in near and far shores.

I cannot unfortunately see it remaining outside our borders given the lax penalties applied. Were I in charge it would be a Mr. Lee Kuan Yew response with fifty lashes for a first offence moving on to execution in three steps.

I did live in a faraway land during an FAM epidemic and it was ugly for agriculture, movement and commerce, although being young and radiating karma, youth and superstars it passed me by.

Transport, essential retail and interest rates are a number of other aspects which will be affected should our softly softly approach fail.

Don't get me wrong
If its spread by soil contaminants then all shoes should be
sacrificed at customs.
 
As some members of ASF are metropolitan based and may be unaware of matters "country" I'm posting quite a good summary from a recent Guardian article on Foot and Mouth Disease which affects only cloven footed animals.

It posits an $80bn. hit to the Australian economy should our herds get FAMD. I believe it will be greater.

We need to have a greater awareness of it and greater defences at our borders from all imports and surveillance of all passengers returning to Australia from affected countries.

Could is be this softly softly approach has an intention?

Actions of western g'mints regarding the Ag/livestock sectors has me thinking very cynically about it.
 
What I'm saying is that's it's London to a brick we get an outbreak, with the current protocols, while still offering plausible deniability... Hmmm.
 
It is all very well and admirable that we are assisting Indonesia in combating their FAM outbreak, however we should be trying our hardest to help stop it coming into PNG.
Unrestricted island hopping occurs not only from PNG to Australia but also from Indonesia to PNG.

Having lived in FNQ for many years, I am aware that there is a real threat of it coming into Australia from PNG via farm pigs carried in dinghies. If FAM ever got into our wild pig population in Cape York then it would quickly spread throughout the country and be utterly impossible to ever eradicate.

Maybe a vaccination programme in PNG, Indonesia and the Northern areas of Australia should be looked at.

Foot and mouth outbreak risk ‘diminishing’​

The risk of foot and mouth disease reaching Australia is diminishing as Indonesia suppresses its outbreak, state and territory leaders have been told.

More than 450,000 cases of the disease have been recorded in Indonesia and thousands of infected cattle have been slaughtered, according to media reports.

An expert biosecurity task force has been established to ensure Australia is fully prepared for any potential outbreak.

But West Australian Premier Mark McGowan on Friday indicated there was optimism Indonesia was getting on top of its outbreak.

“We had a long discussion about foot and mouth disease yesterday at national cabinet,” he told reporters.

“The advice was that it’s low-risk from Indonesia, and the risk is diminishing.

“(The federal government is) of the view that there’s a lot of contact tracing going on in Indonesia and there’s a lot of vaccination going on, which is reducing the risk.

“That’s a good thing, and the task force and measures the Commonwealth government are putting in place are quite appropriate.”

Australia is currently free of the disease, which affects livestock.

“You’ve got to remember that [foot and mouth disease] has existed in Vietnam and Thailand and other countries for a long period of time and it hasn’t come into Australia, it’s just it’s now in Indonesia and there’s measures being put in place to address it,” McGowan said.
