Firefox problems - HELP!

The PDF download extension is here

As for the jpeg issue, maybe get a free program called Irfanview and you might need to associate the files with it.
However Firefox should open jpeg files anyway

Installed Irfanview and it is great compared to Windows Photo Gallery

Many thanks

In FF, I can now use the text editor when posting to ASF
-- I was forced to use IE7 to use colours, bold, underline etc (FF has been fixed over the past week) for ASF postings
-- IE7 frequently hung and was unreliable on my new laptop operating Vista
-- FF opens very quickly compared to IE7

I have a problem with Firefox, not the end of the world, just annoying.

In short, the News.com sites (The Australian and, when I need a laugh, The Tele) and eBay work very poorly in Firefox, pages hang, stop responding etc.

What I do to get around this is either open these sites in an IE Tab, or in IE itself. No big drama but once I have finished browsing with IE tab or IE I feel the need to immediately run CrapCleaner to delete all the rubbish that IE allows into my computer.

It would be much more convenient if I could just use FF for News.com and eBay, like I use it for everything else.

Anyone got any similar problems &/or ways to fix them?

That is really weird! I had that exact problem with news.com.au with IE and when I downloaded Firefox the problem vanished. I think it is a Java problem which had become corrupted; which was fixed when I downloaded Firefox - a new Java was reinstalled. Havent gone back to IE again!

I have been using FF for several years, but my kids use IE when they use my laptop. For reasons unknown, IE stopped working and I installed IE8 to fix the problem (now going)

IE8 is much faster to open because much is loaded upon booting up!

Now my FF is slow to open, is slow and hangs at time and I can no longer upload attachments when posting to the ASF forums.

IMO, the installation of IE8 has caused the problems with FF!!

Thanks Prospector - I checked out my Java on the Sun site and apparently it is up to date .... might try a reinstall of Java anyway and see how it goes.

BigDog, thanks for that, will see if there is anything I can do with IE to help with my FF - but its really only the News and eBay sites that cause me problems (could be others that I don't know of too I suppose).

Might I suggest Google Chrome. My experience has been that it is faster and more stable than Opera, Firefox or IE.

Hey MS - overcoming my inertia with FF is a huge step! I love all the FF add-ons etc.

Might set up a new thread to discuss Chrome?

It was only the news.com.au site that caused my problems too, as well as other sites that are owned by Fairfax media? Now, what is the deal with that!

you could try updating FF and its plugins. I've found that flash is most likely the reason for hangs and crashes to FF - and it happens more often now because of all the flash adverts on most sites now.

Checked out news.com.au and I have no problems with it. I am using version 3.0.10. Try th4e Check for updates from the help menu.

Changing topic slightly... have to check out this article

Despite this further humiliation, Mr Redmond has one consolation. After all the trades he had made were unwound, he had made his former employer a profit.

Thanks everyone, tried a number of things but I think the problem was Flash, which I have now fixed. Ebay and The AUstralian sites both working nicely (no hangs) on Firefox.

In the last week or so I have tried Opera, Chrome & IE. Opera and Chrome I liked, but still prefer Firefox over them all. Another I tried is K-meleon, which is sort of a mini-Firefox and I liked it best over those other three, but not as much as Firefox.

Firefox problem

I have been using Firefox and yesterday when I went to bring it up I had a notice saying "Firefox will start shortly after updates". Didn't give me a choice about the update and duly started. Soon after that there was a screen saying it had crashed and please send a report to Firefox.
Clicked all the buttons. It then just kept repeating. Didn't at all come back to my Google homepage as usual.

So I switched to IE and had some problems there also when it said "IE has encountered a problem and has to close" after a while. Just had to bring it up again and it seems OK this morning.

Isn't there some way you can reset the PC back to where it was before FF update?

If so, is there a way to avoid getting FF updates in future?

Would much appreciate any help.

Hi Julia,

In Firefox's menus go to: Tools -> Options, then click "Advanced".

You will then see four tabs, "General", "Network", "Update" and "Encryption". Click on "Update" and then select the option that says "Ask me what I want to do" in the "When updates to Firefox are found:" section.

Julia, not sure how far you got with Firefox. You can usually get it open by starting it in Safe Mode. (Go to Start - Programs - Mozilla - Firefox(SafeMode).

It will prompt you with what you want to disable. I'd "check" disable your add-ons. Then "make Changes and restart". Once Firefox starts ( assuming it does) in Safe Mode, go to Firefox's Help - Check for Updates and try the install again. Actually, DISABLING YOUR ADD-ONS will permanently disable them and you'd have to manually re-enable them later.

One other thing is that even though it appeared to crash, the update may have taken. Type about: in the URL bar to retrieve the current version information.

By the way, once you close the Safe Mode firefox, the next time you open it, it will open normally ( won't be stuck in Safe Mode).

Apart from that, it's a standalone application. You might be able to uninstall the current version if you can find the older version out there ( not sure about extension compatibilities and all the security updates you forgo by remaining at an older version).

Hi Julia,

Have you tried re-booting your PC? I had a similar problem with FF some time ago and the re-boot sorted it out.

On another occasion, some website buttons wouldn't work properly in FF. Eventually I discovered that it was the anti virus tool bar that was causing a conflict. When that add-on was removed, it all worked well again.

If you do decide to uninstall/re-install FF, remember to back up your bookmarks first!

Agree with Joe's post to take it off automatic updates and make it ask first - mine is set up this way.

The above is only my and may not be any help whatsoever! - I'm no expert in IT issues!...

how bout you just use chrome. I dont know how all you people can put up with firefox and its EXTREME memory leaks after 5 minutes of basic use.

Joe, I can't access FF in the first place. Attached screenshot is what comes up when I try.

Thanks, $20 shoes. As above, I still get the same screen.

Hi Julia,

Tried this, sails. No difference.

Separate problem: I use Winsnap for screenshots. If I have numbered screenshots stored, say 1 - 6, then the new screenshot will automatically come up as No. 7. This isn't happening. I keep getting No. 6 and when I'm asked "This already exists: do you want to replace it" and I click on No, the screenshot just isn't saved. I've tried deleting the No. 6 which appears before the above notice and typing in No. 7 or a name for the shot, but then it isn't saved.
I am technologically a complete idiot and just hate this stuff.
Any further help would be hugely appreciated.

The other problem is when using IE ASF won't remember me and I have to log in each time, even then it doesn't recognise me.
Joe has given me instructions (for his IE8) (I have IE7) - Tools, Internet Options, General Tab then uncheck the box that says 'delete temp files, cookies etc. I don't have this.
What I've found that appears to be the alternative is attached.
No box to check or uncheck:
