Anyone know of or recommend a good file recovery program, preferably freeware. I need to recover some photo's off a hard disk with a corrupted FAT or partition. The files are there, I just need a decent program to get them back.

Thre is something called pci_filerecovery.exe. It's a freebie. It's about 5.83meg. If you can't find it, let me know and I can send it to you.

Power was lost to my external hard drive and now when I turn it on I can hear drive tries in an endless loop to do something but fails to show to be there.

Is there anything to remedy that?

Also I saw some kind of software to prevent corruption of external drive due to power loss, but I cannot find it now.

Could somebody be able to help me?

GDay UF.

You should try pluggin the drive into a XP box, and let XP detect the FAT mismatch, or orphaned files...

But if they are important files to you, whichever program you use, be caucious, and carefully read the message b4 you hit the enter/proceed key.

Happy, not sure if your drive is "seeking" at startup, and whether software will fix that, as that's ususally caused by physical damage, or plain drive failure, and not so much power failures IMO

Though not a confirmation that that is the case....

sounds like your HardDrive has had it. if you hear a hard crunching sound its the h/d. write down any error messages are you using this as a backup drive for storage only?

External hard drive tries to do something and after several minutes I can recognise similar sounds in cycles, cycle is something like half a minute, so drive is trying to do something, but Windows Explorer doesn't see that External drive exists.

External drive can do that endlessly, and when I touch drive it feels that drive is spinning at high speed.

For computer hard drive, if it plays up I can keep escape button down and I can start drive in safe mode.

Is there anything like that for external drive?

Sorry for hijacking original thread.

I don't use external hard drives myself , I still prefer dvd wr cd wr for backup. Like most hardware issues its best to to google it, as its very likely someone else in the world has the same issue start by the brand of the external drive and the problem I have fixed many h/d issues this way , hopefully you have kept the receipt in case its a warranty issue.

The most important thing is to not use the corrupted drive (except for recovery attempts).

Any writing of new data is likely to further destroy any hope of recovering what you've lost.

When I need to recover data I put the drive in a different computer as a secondary drive so that the computer doesn't write the page file / other temporary files to it.
