Rafael appears to have the number of Roger, beating him and taking the torch after Wimbeldon.

This is a huge match as far as history goes, if Rafa wins, he moves to 6 slams, probably 7 after the French (which seems to be a given these days), putting him only 6 behind Fed with 5 years in hand. With that said, IF Nadal wins tonight, you would have to assume it would only be a matter of time until he takes out Feds new record (assuming he actually gets 2 more slams). BUT if Fed can win tonight, he takes the difference between the two to 9, with 5 years in Nadals favour, making it a hard ask for Rafa.

The head to head record from memory, is 12-6 to Rafa, but 9 of those are on clay. Whilst Federed holds a 3-2 winning record against Rafa on hard court.

Rafa will no doubt have a slight edge taken off him after his match against Verdasco, but if one man is fit enough and strong mentally enough to pull through, it would be he. However, on the other hand, if one man is good enough to push him to his mental limits, it's going to be Roger.

Who wins?

I've got Nadal as I backed him at the beginning of the tournament, but this one should be brilliant, to say the very least. Roger is craftier, comes to the net better, probably has a better return of serve, but Rafa will have an edge from the baseline, with his heavy shots and lack of errors, not to mention, pure workrate. Cannot wait.

I'm sure whether Nadal will take Federer's Record in the Long Run.

Lots of good players out there who i think will challenge him in coming years,

Djokavic,Tsonga,Verdasco[Maybe],Murray

I like Federer though.
 
It seems unfair that one finalist gets an extra day to recover.

Surely with so much prestige and prize money on the line it would be essential to make the conditions as equal as possible.
 
Federer and Nadal have taken tennis to yet another level...i just don't think
its possible to play any better than these 2.

Ill go Federer cos he will be a little fresher and better for the Wimbledon loss.

I think, hope it will be a legendary match and Nadal can recover from his epic the other night. I dont mind who wins, I think they are both awesome players. But more importantly I wish Nadal would go back to sleeveless.

You know, he has had to do that in every match we have seen him. Must be very uncomfortable for him. He needs to have a chat with Pat Rafter and his 'very comfy undies'. Either that, or there are women's knickers that guarantee not to um, 'ride up' so perhaps he needs to deck himself in ladies knickers.
 

Being the Australian Open and all, maybe Rafa could wear some Elle Macpherson's "Intimates" lingerie.

Or perhaps some of Kylie Minogue's "Love Kylie" range.

beerwm, completely agree, the competition for Nadal in the coming years is going to be extremelly tough, but don't think any will be able to match him on the clay, so he should take a heap of French opens, a few others over the years and it's a wrap.

dutchie, yeh, you would think they would try and even it out as much as possible. But I guess if they all play on the same day, the following day would just be womans matches and probably not attended to the same extent.

So cynical, I agree, they have taken the game to another level! Just think, tonight we may be watching the two greatest tennis players of all time, matching it up head to head! What a dream.
 
Just watching the momentum swings, I wonder if the crowd audible bias or "silent thoughts" control this momentum swing.

Federer is crushed. Looks ready to cry and fair enough, I think I would.

Ah well, win my bet. Thank god, I was worrying for a while there.

Nadal has to be one of the most mentally tough men I have seen in my life. Insane. I would think he would go on now to break any record set by Fed in the future.

I think Federer has some years left in him. Although the complete collapse in the fifth set shows his mettle is breaking.

The way Nadal is playing it will be extremely difficult for him to sustain that pace and physical strength. He looks tired this year compared to the previous years. I would say Nadal's reign will be over in a couple of years.

What a magnificent show of five gruelling sets and Nadal defeated Federer in more than 4 hours set.

I thought the game will be over when returning from WACA witnessing the one dayer between Oz vs Kiwis tonight but still managed to watch the final set,

What a power considering last match in semi final Nadal won after similar 4 hours battle on Friday where Federer got some extra day's rest

Well done on your firm conviction and wining prediction

I wish your stocks favour you similar way too
 
MRC & Co, perhaps you need to look at the way some of the production was done so that images of Nadal and his tugging were avoided, it bothers more than just people chatting on the internet forum by the way but hey, whatever. I have a life, though, it just isnt all about hero worship.

We missed everything after the first two sets thanks to a blackout. That and the cricket.

I agree. Wow a fantastic night for sports. I kept switching between cricket and the open. Hats off to Nadal. He willed himself to a win. I cannot believe after his match the other night he had the gusto to go 5 sets and looked plenty mental tough in the 5th set.
 
by far one the best matches ever, last night was worth staying up past midnight - for those that missed the emotional side of the match here's a short clip.
It kinda looked like Nadal was close to tears as well...both played brilliantly no doubt - And one of the Greatest Tennis Rivalry goes on.
