So, Ive just watched Deep Impact on TV.. for the I dont know how manyth time. And everytime it gets me thinking ??? Would would I do.

I want to pose this question to you people here at ASF and see what your varying answers are, and ill share with you my answer.

Ok, so lets just say that there is an extinction level event about to happen on earth, lets just say this happens to be a meteor impact that will strike the ocean, yet will still cause a extinction level event due to its size, so that in a week the world is blanketed in dust and within a mnth all plant life is dead and within 4mnths all animal life is dead. Obviously when i say "all", there will be species that survive.. but we'll just say all for convienience.

It doesnt matter if your city is destroyed instantly by the tsunami, within mnths you prolly will be as well from lack of food and water or from other people in gang warfare for survival.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO ????

Would you seek survival at all costs and try to survive as long as you can, as a prime directive that all organisms have embedded in their brains. Or would you commit suicide b4 or as the event is happeneing without trying to survive, or would you try to survive but if you found it to hard would you kill your self ?

I know your going to hear people saying, yes i can survive woithout technology, all humans did only hundreds of years ago.. YES.. but not in cities the size of brisbane where all our food is imported. Cities today are not self sufficient.

SO...

This is what I would honestly do. Im in brisbane on the coast, so if i knew the meteor was hitting the pac ocean, id go to the beach and get so drunk and take as many Ecstacy pills as i could and live out the last few hours as the happiest and most carefree person on this great planet. I would be killed without fear or pain. Id take a portable boom box with me and blast it and dance away, and take friends if they wanted to do the same.

Regardless of what my family was doing, thats what i would do, if they wanted id give them a stash of substances they could keep if they ever felt the need to painlessly kill themselves.

If i wasnt going to be killed from the wave instantly, i would try to survive but have the pills as back up incase it got to hard.

.....

With out a future, i can see no point in living.

thoughts, people ????

By the way, im 19 and have no kids or anything, so for me, ending my life wouldnt be like im leaving my kids to fend for themselves or anything.

Even though its pretty impossible to say what i would do if i had a wife and kids, id like to think we could all go out together, happy, together and without fear of trying to live in a dead world.

You do realise this market slump isn't that bad...

If it were me, it would depend on the scale of the disaster.

If we're talkign about the Earth covered in dust and a complete lack of sunlight then the odds of survival are pretty low. Underground would really be the only option but in most situations like that flooding will be a problem (mines flood if the pumps are turned off).

But if there was still likely to be sunlight then I would try to survive but I'd want to be perhaps 20km beyond the outer suburbs of a city. Far enough to be away from all the mess and dead bodies, potential riots if there are many survivors etc but close enough to walk there once the safety of doing so can be determined.

Why would you want to go to the city after the disaster? Recover some useful things. Medicines and clothing would be obvious ones. Various tools and materials would be useful. A light source and a means of running it would be handy too if that could be arranged.

One part of me says, "Grab all of my wine and scotch and a box of fine Cuban cigars, and enjoy the event!"

The other part is more competitive and says get rope, fishing line, a knife, waterproof matches and whatever can fit into your survival kit and live longer than anyone else!" Maybe my never-conquered-high-school-crush will live up to her promise, "only if you were the last man alive" ????

How long does it take life to adapt? How long does it take life to adapt, if forced?

Good to see you live in hope.

On the upside....if its just you and me left....then she is going to pick me

I would try to survive., Wife, 8 month old little girl, definetely survive, she hasn't started to crawl yet.

I would board the windows on my house, get as many supplies as possible.

I think regardless of the event, there will be a huge number of people who will survive and will band together to try to farm etc.

Tough life, but it could also be a good one.

I'm not sure why people are trying to survive this, didn't you say 'extinction' level, which by definition means everyone dies.

I assume you mean what do we do up until we all die, which in that case, I'd have a dinner party with my closest family and friends right up until the last moment, partaking in the finest food, vino and conversation I could. And at the very final moment, I'd like to be like that really old couple in the movie Titanic, cuddling each other in bed as the water rose around them.

What a depressing thread!!!!!!!!!!

I suppose it makes you think about what's really important in life......

head between legs, ... and kiss your ass goodbye
better still plan ahead and learn to value the planet - it's all we got

We're very lucky in Australia - plenty of land and resources means not too much conflict.

Probably I would jump in the car, go around and pick up all the relatives and trustworthy friends and go into the country. Find somewhere with good rainfall, and plenty of farms requiring physical labour and you can survive

To the farmers in this thread: what do you plan to farm with no sunlight, leading to freezing cold and no rainfall?

If it was an event that I knew there was no hope of surviving, I'd be with aaronphetamine and die carefree. That said, that's the benefit of hindsight - in the situation, I wouldn't be sure that it was not survivable and in that situation I'd head out west with the best stockpile I could gather, and as many friends and family as I could get together.

Drink a bottle of good scotch and smoke a good cigar, knowing it will be the last time I do it for a while.

Then, survive at any cost. Some of the best experiences in life stem from the most challenging circumstances.

Now back to stocks . . . there's still money to be made before the world ends.

Without a future, i can see no point in living.

By the way, im 19 and have no kids or anything, so for me, ending my life wouldnt be like im leaving my kids to fend for themselves or anything. (ecstacy etc)

couple of comments m8 -
a) when you say you'd hit some ecstacy - sheesh - then on top of everything else, we've all gotta worry about YOU, - lol - wandering around spaced out - tapdancing through a meteor shower singing "just ringing in the rain" or somethin

b) Swiss people have compulsory fallout shelters in their basements - sounds to me like the next generation are gonna speak Swiss ( ok ok - = German, French, Italian etc)

c) guess I'd grab a few cans of baked beans (and the family) and head for the Jenolan Caves or summit

d) "Without a future, no point in living" - interesting - you'd have to add a heap more difficulties to the hypothetical scenario to justify anything rash lol.
at least the converse works :-
"Without a living, you can still have a future" - that's what the dole was invented for !

https://www.aussiestockforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=184040&highlight=heston#post184040
planet of the apes - charlton heston - final scene

e) But I would hate to see my fellow man go all selfish etc - bit like Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, where men - crying - had to admit to stealing food from youngsters during the crisis , not knowing if they were effectively killing them in the process )

f) Would you let things deteriorate until cannabilsm became the only sensible course of action ( like the planecrash in the Andes)

g) SO MANY TESTS FOR A SOCIETY !
What a (critical) opportunity for strong leaders to stand up and be counted etc etc .

h) And if you saw society / mankind degenerating into a rabble - whether looting - hurricane Katrina again - but possibly with some justification on that occasion. - or fighting for positions in queues or taxis etc ......

- "ok ok - let's have a queue here!!! " - If you've ever tried to catch a cab in Korea (Seoul etc) you'll know what I mean. lol

- You also see it in Sydney (amongst drivers) when there's a traffic jam that lasts more than 10 minutes, -

would you just "go away to some place quiet where people were acting more sensibly?" - like, when I see a traffic jam with people swearing at each other, I'll travel 10 kms to get around it lol.

i) Conversely , orderly boarding of liferafts happens - occasionally - (a la Titanic - to the point where many lifeboats weren't even filled ) , etc

- only "slightly orderly" boarding of the last planes / choppers to leave Saigon etc - So much at stake sheesh - so much to lose ( or so they thought) : 2twocents

Hi Aaronphetamine

Hope this topic isn't representative of your current market position?

As for me i would treat it like trading, that is never ever give up and never say die keep smiling and charging until the last breath.

hi focus,
when you say "keep charging" - is that in the same way my wife does?
or in the bullish market sense?

"say boss did you ever see a more splendiferous crash !! hahahah"

Years of watching Macgyver when I was a kid prepares me for such a situation. I'd grab a few twigs from the nearest tree, build a space ship and fly into space until the disaster resolves itself.

Can't help being boringly literal here. Surely the meteor/tsunami isn't going to obliterate the whole world? If you have enough warning to know it's going to happen, then wouldn't you pretty smartly head off for a safer part of the world?

If your scenario has the whole world being wiped out in four months from the event, then I guess I'd get busy spending some money!

Hi 20/20

Charging = Just give it all you have and more

While on such a happy subject isn't the growing wave of human population having the same effect any way just in slow motion?
