Dunning-Kruger Effect

I must be stupid. Or maybe not. I am almost certainly stupid at gardening, but then I don't pretend to be smart at it. Same deal with building rockets and neurosurgery. I don't think I am stupid in other areas like, say, finance. However, I can not be absolutely sure that I actually am stupid in cooking or not stupid in finance.

Yet, every now and then and now and now, we encounter someone we think is utterly stupid in a field where they project themselves as being competent. Why does this happen? Are we to believe that they actually hold the truth in their hands and that we are the stupid one as they claim?

In a contest of ideas in a field where exact outcomes are not definitively possible how do you gauge whether you are the patsy or the one playing the others? Could we be too stupid to realise that we are actually stupid?

Moving right along. When a person, presenting themselves as an expert in a field, who may be stupid within this field in any case, presents an abomination of a thought sequence which defies the very fabric of space time... and can't recognise it and keeps digging in...you know the rest...why does this happen? The idea is absolutely wrong. We've all done this...well, certainly, I have.
