Hi all,

I'm new to trading, and am looking to buy some stocks in a particular company to start off with. I might just do the one trade and no more for awhile, and if I do trade more, it would probably be infrequently.

I'm wondering whether I should use Online Trading (Commsec/ETrade) to purchase said stocks, or can I go to an actual broker and ask them to purchase the stocks for me? Would one way be cheaper than the other?

Apologies if this has been asked before..

Thanks,
Nate.

Online is cheaper, there are cheaper than Comsec and ETrade, but they are the ones I use.

Read their "how to's" carefully first, before placing a trade , particularly in relation to the price at which you are actually buying or selling.

Cool, thanks for the info.. I've spent the last few days reading up on the various different brokers out there, but as yet I havent really read anything that has swayed me either way - particularly between comsec/etrade.

Can anyone advise whether or not you are charged for using these services even if you dont make/rarely make trades?

Commsec is cheaper...sign up free and get a feel for things, i recommend the estimate button before you actually place an order, so you can just triple check everything's right. :)

Nayte, before you do anything, have a read through this thread, kindly put together by Sir O.

In fact, read through all the threads in the Beginners' Forum.

Then I'd suggest if you're unsure about which broker to use, phone them and have them talk you through what they can offer.

Stay away from full service brokers.

Nayte, from my first experience, I am glad I went with Comsec, only because I had my account with them. They are excellent to deal with when your beginning.
Anz, Wespac, Nab have similar setups. I wouldn't worry about the cost when you are beginning. They make it easier to set up the CHESS, and all that litigation.
May be getting a little late in the Month but I'm quite sure NAB is doing a "Free trades" for the month of August with new clients.
When you do get into the action, don't make my uneducated mistake,
and 'BUY at Market'. Set your price. It's not hard to sought out

Good punting, chrisalex

Thanks everyone for you replies, some great advice..

I'm currently reading through the "Newbie Lessons" thread that Julia kindly posted and there's some great information in there, it's good to know I'm not the only one with "silly" questions :)
