How condescending is Opera and her show. I saw it the other day, how rigged is that show. Here is some filthy rich woman, out complaining about the plight of those less well off than her.

She wasn't always rich. I haven't seen the show but don't know why you have a problem with her drawing attention to the plight of those less fortunate?
(And it's 'Oprah'.)

mmmmm my problem is she/they make money by drawing attention to things that are all US based.

It's just wrong the way that a people might make and support a television programme which deals with issues in their country. Absolutely disgusting.

Ummm... last time I checked, her primary audience was the US......... Is it unfair that she markets her program to her key geographical audience?

Look, I'm not really a fan of Oprah (what male is!!), but she does raise some very important topics sometimes, so my view is that some discussion on controversial topics is better than nothing! After all, it's better than bloody Dr Phil, the bane of every husbands existence!!!

Cheers

I sort of agree with you - she makes (a lot of) money invariably through the misery of others; and according to wikipedia; she's given away 303 million, but, (once again, according to wiki) she almost made all of that back in 2007 alone.

I guess my opinion is, if money is going to be made through the touching of these 'controversial topics', then most of the gains should go to those people.

On the other hand though - at least she's making money by creating awareness, which is always good - perhaps the value of influence is far greater than any monetary donation

Hello Reece

I'm fascinated by your comment about Dr Phil. I saw his show once and that was enough. But I have a cousin (female) who hangs on his every word as complete gospel. What is about him that's a problem for husbands in particular? The cousin mentioned above rules the domestic perch so perhaps Dr Phil reinforces that philosophy???

Hey Julia

My wife loves his show!!!! I can't stand the guy!!!!

I guess for me, what I find is that his comments are always showing up what normal men are able to do for their wives, which I might add tend to be the majority of the topics on his show! I think in principle what he has to say relationship wise is excellent, but I think it is fairly easy for a man that runs a multi million dollar TV programme to show that he spoils his wife and kids. However, for a normal working man to compete with this image is impossible! At the moment, as an accountant, I am working some 60 hours a week to try and get reports done for listed companies in time. How do I compete with Dr Phil!!!!

As a caveat, whilst my wife does watch it a fair bit, I would say that she in all honesty is very fair to me and looks after me extremely well, but if I have to hear another "but Dr Phil says......." I swear, I am going to lose it LOL!

Cheers

She is the most powerful and influential woman on this Earth...if you don't like her don't watch her.

I think she is just brilliant.

Hats off to you Oprah...god only know what will happen one day when she retires from daytime telly.

Sounds like you don't have a lot to worry about, Reece! And you're probably better looking than Dr Phil, huh?
Anyway, a bunch of flowers for your lovely wife will usually result in disproportionate gratitude and love! Most women are real suckers for flowers.
Don't know if Dr Phil promotes this?

I'd rather watch the thunderbirds than the drivel that his played to air.

HAHAHAHA.... Well, I would think yes I am better looking that Dr Phil, but I guess that is horses for courses..... LOL

And your right -the simple flower goes along way, my wife is a sucker for them too....... Still, I would much prefer to have the funds to give her an Argyle pink diamond...... Ahh.... one day, perhaps Rio will sponsor me... LOL....

Visual, for the record, i love my wife more than is describable in words, hope that clarifies the issues!!!!! Perhaps my words weren't the best when discussing the issue intially!!!!

And Flying fish, mate in the space of a day I think you have come up with more controversial topics than ever discussed on ASF, my hat off to you..... But I love the thunderbirds, so the comparison didn't really work for me!

Cheers

Glad to hear it,Reece, sometimes words can be very one dimensional especially in these type of posts.:)but aren't you glad you used different words second time around.

Yes, how dare she work her way out of poverty, be told she would never amount to anything...now to be rich, rich, rich and be able to help so many people. Just makes you sick. :banghead:

Gee you must only watch when she deals with US issues.

I've seen some vision of the donations made during the Asian Tsunami and how they have helped rebuild some of the devastated areas.

Also the school for young black South African girls which Oprah funded herself. (I think she funded the schools by herself but stand to be corrected)

She does some good work.
