Cyclone Larry

Re: Larry

Wow what a blast. back on line after 24 hrs. That thing really packed a punched

Will agree with that statement. I live at Mission Beach and it sure has done some damage here. I managed to stay online the whole time using laptop and CDMA phone only to find out this morning that my telstra copper line never went down. Just needed a pull of the generator cord and I was back on adsl.. Just wasn't game to go under the house to get the generator until the winds went below a respectable figure.. Scary stuff...

Re: Larry

Phones worked all day, pity about the power, and my Bloody backup generator wouldn't start!! Anyway hope you did'nt get too much damage down there, was quiet a freaky morning though, never seen anything like. cheers

Re: Larry

Crackaton, Seaking, and anyone else in FNQ

Commiserations to you all up there. It must have been quite terrifying. Good to know you, and apparently most other people in the area, are OK. Hope the clean up is not too difficult. It must be awful being without power and water for days on end if you have no generator.

Good luck.

Thx Julia.

I've seen the news reports, and it doesn't look nice up there - hope that all your families were safe, and that any damage was minimal
cheers

And if true that weather is going to be more severe, (more heavy rains, stronger winds, higher high temperatures and longer periods), it would probably make sense to take this into account when building new house or restoring smashed one.

Bunker, drinking water storage, safe composting or other type hygienic portable toilets and gas generators would be an idea if not for every resident at least for all Councils and public offices.

Darwin took note after their cyclone and I really wander why all Australia didn’t adopt strong house policy.
As to trees I have an idea too, some types of trees should not be allowed in a built up area and if they’re already, should be pruned the way that don’t pose immediate risk to residents.

Don Bourke mentioned, that even roots affect building foundation and tree should be away from any building 1 ½ mature height.
This method alone would prevent much damage in any city.

Maybe one day?
