This cyclone is a category 5 and looks to be very destructive indeed.
Just thinking about gg and noco in Townsville: hope it doesn't affect that far south, and anyone else who lives in FNQ. Winds up to 300KPH and massive rainfall.

It's such a beautiful part of the world, but this is the downside.

Hope you all keep safe.

We are at this stage quite distant from the terror of Ita, but cyclones are always very unpredictable and could turn south at any time.

I have been through 3 in Townsville and one in Fiji and believe me they can be quite scary.
 

Their models are predicting a turn South. They seem reasonably accurate from my experience with them here, so do take care Noco...

This is the latest chart from the Courier Mail this morning.....It may take a path 100km west of Townsville.

Once it has crossed the coast, it should slow down to maybe a category 2...so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

I feel for the residence of Cooktown, where I also have relatives, as they look like having to tend with the full force..

Good luck to all in the area.

The rain will hopefully solve any drought problems for a while, hopefully it won't be too savage.

Let us hope there is not too much damage.

I was up there not 4 weeks ago.

If the eye of Cyclone Ita, gets past Cape Flattery all bets are off. Cairns and further south will suffer.

Stay well all in Cooktown, Hopevale.

Now downgraded to Category 4...bad enough........Should be Category 1 by the time it passes Townsville out to sea.
I feel for my rellies in Cooktown and Mossman.
 
I'm not familiar with the area but media reports in other states refer to the prospect of a town (not sure the name of it) being pretty much obliterated depending on the actual path this cyclone takes.

Let's hope it comes ashore somewhere clear of any towns etc thus minimising the damage. Best wishes to everyone up there.

Ita crossed the coast at 9pm near Cape Flattery and is heading SSW towards Cooktown and Cairns tomorrow morning with 2 M storm surge.....some of the Cairns CBD may be flooded with the surge.

I believe we are fairly safe in Townsville as it is predicted to be around Category 1 by Sunday but it is expected to head out sea east of Townsville and may gain strength again.

My doggie is in an urn on top of my study desk.....had to put him down on the 25 February...he was 12 years old.

noco and Julia, a bit off topic. I was looking at my older Lab today and he doesn't have much longer in him, and was looking for a spot to bury him when he carked it, but cremation is easier. So it is interesting the way the thread has gone.

Quiet here tonight. No change in wildlife, so I reckon we are OK in Townsville for the present.

Must be a great relief to all up in FNQ that Ita's fury diminished as she arrived. I gather Townsville is quite OK?
 
Much ado about nothing. Ita turns out to be a pussy-cat. Probably not one dog will suffer PTSD.
