Connecting 2 Laptops

Connecting 2 laptops...stuck on this one...any suggestions out there

I run 2 laptops, one with "windows XP" the other being newer has "Vista Premium" and I cannot get them to set up to transfer files between the 2

I have downloaded all required files for both, setup the same workgroup, given each it's own name, authorised any logon info, etc etc.

I can view each computer on the other under workgroup computers but I cannot access them.:cussing:

Each can access the internet through a "DI 534" 4 port unit, just wont talk to each other...^&*($%#@)

Any help would be greatful...

Have you setup Filesharing for the directory you want.

Right Click On Folder...

check your usernames, make sure the name and password is identical on both computers, or you at least have corresponding accounts on both machines.

also try disabling your firewall, if traffic goes through then you probably just need to open some ports or allow all lan traffic.

can you access xp from vista?


Please follow the instructions: I am assuming that your computers are free to access each other and not providing a secure solution.


Now that we have the warning out of the way , we can talk business.

on your xp machine do the following:
1: On the my computer Icon click your right(not left) button. A list will appear. Click on manage from the list. a program name computer management will appear.
2: Go to local users and Groups:
a- click on the users , a list of users will appear on your right side
b- Double Click on Guest and check-off account is disabled.
c- Press ok and close this guest window.



Now go to program-> run and type \\(name or ip address of vista machine) e.g. if vista machine has ip 192.168.1.100 type \\192.168.1.100 .

Yes, you need to enable sharing - either on a folder, or a drive. Simply right-click on whatever you want to share, click Sharing & security; & tick the box to enable it. Remember to allow/disallow files to be edited on the shared directory.

good call, I have had similar problems with wireless routers and found that a crosover cable is easier

I'm no expert but could it be something to do with the fact that your IP addresses are dynamically assigned? try fixing the IP addresses.

alternatively if it's just for occcasional file transfers you could just use a usb stick! you can get decent size ones now for pretty cheap.

I'm using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard utility which is part of the Windows XP install to exchange files between my XP Desktop and Vista Laptop over wireless. Very easy to use.
Note: you have to install this Wizard on your Vista machine as well if it wasn't part of the build.

I recently had the same problem. I ended up just using my usb harddrive to transfer all my files, I use the internet to simply download programs I wanted again (it helped me avoid putting useless crap from my old computer, on my new computer)

I found the problem...
Network adapter is kaput on the old computer, will probably use a USB for transfers.
