Citizenship Testing - Submission

I have just submitted my views on the Citizenship Testing - Community Consultation at:-

For the record my views were:-

comments: I beleive that NO ONE should be allowed enter this country unless they speak English and be able to show they have a strong understanding of our culture. They should have to commit to uphold our values and culture. There also should be a probation period, of at least 4 years, and if they fail to uphold there commitment, they should be immediatly expelled from Australia.

This is open to all the express their opinion. Have your say!

Your suggestion would preclude e.g. elderly family coming to join younger family who have migrated here and successfully integrated into the community.
Is that fair?

So which people do we consult? Australia is geographically diverse and has citizens from all different cultures and religions each with their own values. We could base it on the stereotypical Australian, but the fact remains that doesn't represent all Australians.

Surely before we can test it, we need to be able to quantify it. So what questions would you ask in such a test?

Julia I think with that question one must ask who will pay for them long term ?( you & I or their family )

Family reunion is probably OK.

But let face it, citizenship is not mandatory to remain in Australia, so lets not hang too much emphasis behind little old ladies and gentlemen.

I don’t have too many answers but I agree with comment that Australian citizenship should not be given away as confetti or something along the lines.

Why would it preclude them?
Recent studies indicate that elderly people who study a new language can dramatically slow the effects of dementia etc.
I have seem a few people in their 80's learning french.
For those that really are too old to learn, say 85/90+ - special dispensation could be provided for.

Bob,
Definitely their family. I do not support bringing in people who are simply going to be a drain on the tax payer. Sorry, I should have clarified that in my original post.

This is why, as long as the idea remains airy fairy as at present, with politicians just attempting to sound concerned and protective, it's all just a bit silly imo.

And if there were a list of questions to be answered before anyone is allowed in, and if those potential immigrants had evil intent, are they likely to declare their evil intentions in some questionnaire? Not likely.

Not test is ever going to change anybody’s intent, but there is need for new measures to revoke citizenship and deport individual concerned.

And should it be allowed to extrapolate few generations back, or anybody the better.

After all the very first occupants on this so called piece of dirt dates back 40,000 or 50,000 years or was it only 30,000

UN can take care of rejects if no country wants them.

We are part of the UN. Thats why we accept refugees now.

I propose that immigrants speak at least 2 dialects of Aboriginal or have truckloads of money.

Football, meat pies, Kangaroos and Holden Cars, they go together underneath the Southern Stars.

Thats all they need to know.
Is that too hard for them?

Dual citizenship is the problem. Someone seeking Aussie citizenship should be prepared to revoke any other Citizenship. That would sort out the problem.

Agree!

Anyone here understand the values and culture of the Indigenous people? Let's put this to test and ask anyone who fails to learn it or leave the country.
