the logical enemies/invaders of Japan/South Korea are relatively close even if an extremist government took control of the Philippines and attacked Japan you have ( obviously ) North Korea , China , Russia and Mongolia , less likely are Vietnam , Malaysia , while India is only likely to come in as an ally to a major nationi can't see the advantage of Japan/South Korea spotting a potential attack from several thousand miles away when most major threats are much closer , now IF Japan gets lured into providing major support to a China/Taiwan war or North v. South Korean war , Japan ( and the foreign military bases there ) would be uncomfortably close to the conflict
