Calculating dividends and stock increase historically

Hi all,

I'm sure this is something that has been many times before but for some reason I can't find the tool(s) for it. I understand it can be done manually but I'm hoping there's a simple online calculator. I would like to be able to historically (3-10yrs) calculate my return on some blue ship stocks, such as BHP, CBA, with dividends. Ideally I'd like to have two scenarios:

- Starting investment of $xxxxx, with monthly payments of $xxxxx and calculate total growth if all dividends are re-invested into the stock
- Starting investment of $xxxxx, with monthly payments of $xxxxx and calculate total growth if all dividends are simply taken out and put somewhere else.

Hi,
I can help you with a list of past dividends, including ex-div and pay dates.
But you'd have to add the respective share prices from historic charts; I doubt very much that what you're after is freely available on the www. If you do find something, please let us know because I'm also interested in such an exercise.
If you find you'll have to go it alone, IM me for details. I'm happy to contribute my history records, even participate in some help with Excel, if needed.

Yes, I wouldn't take reinvestment to mean participation in any DRP; not all companies offer a DRP to begin with, and then there certainly is the reasoning in my post that you referred to.
What I'd do in case this Research Project gets off the ground: Add a couple of columns to the dividend sheet, where I'd capture the Closing price on Pay Day (because you don't have the money to spend any earlier), plus the Low and High in the following x weeks - assuming IF we were to reinvest, we'd pick a realistic buy price, say half-way between the monthly High and Low. Not perfect, but probably over all a reasonable approximation.

If sufficient interest exists, I might even ask one of my (prop) data providers for access to their data history. Let's say we can get monthly OHLC for all dividend-paying ASX stocks, I could easily enough import the additional columns with an extension of my Excel macros.
