Hi all, just wondering what is the go with buying these second hand metastock CD's?

I know nothing about trading software, so I'm just trying to figure out what you dont get when you buy second hand for $200 vs new $1000 odd.

Thanks guys.

Buying second hand stuff always carries a risk of some sort in my oppinion.
Having said that, a couple of years ago, I bought on ebay a metastock v 10 e signal for $ 100, and have had no problems with it.
I'm not sure about all metastock, but that particular disc could be registered in two seperate names, ....I had to take the guys word for it that it had only been registered once, but everything has worked out ok..
Chech this out if you can, and make sure it will be alright to register it in your name..

Why spend $1000 when $200 can do the same job, but in the end it's your decision...

Just be aware that if you buy the copy of Metastock 9.0 that is listed continually on Ebay for $100 is undoubtedly a counterfeit copy.
I challenged this character once and he reckoned he was selling on behalf of a trading club (yeah, right).

If you wait, there are occasionally legitimate second hand copies listed on Ebay and they come with the all the manuals usually and work well.
I bought version 9.1 and I am very pleased with it.

I don't know you would go with version 10 onwards which require activation however.

Just as a note, although it may not apply in this case

however, I dont think a pre-Vista version of Metastock will run on later operating systems

Since v9 of MetaStock, Equis changed the licence agreement which specifically did not allow you to transfer the licence from one person to another.

So, if you do buy MetaStock v9 or above "second hand" you'll probably find:
a) You won't be able to register with Equis and get support/upgrades
b) The licence activation may or may not work... so you could be stuck with a very expensive manual and a non-working product.

Indeed my Metastock v10.1 no longer works simply because I ugpraded my drive C from a 15K RPM drive to a SSD drive.

AmiBroker is well worth a look in my opinion.

I decry software that has licence-limited number of users, and requires constant $ upgrades, for various seemingly profit gouging reasons ( like Microsoft)

I appreciate software that has much less restrictive licence requirements and each version is designed to continue to work well into the future for reasonable cost.

Amibroker seems to me to fall into the preferred category and Metatstock into the former.

Amibroker is so cheap now with strong $A it almost sells itself,

buying a 2nd hand MS might be false economy?

I have a brand new, still in plastic version of Metastock 10.

Does anybody know is it worth anything to sell, or is it usable with todays systems? It has the setup key, and comes with a multi media Advanced Metastock training disk. I know Metastock is up to version 12 now.

My wife got if from a from a second hand shop, thinking I could use it, along with a heap of other trading software, but I am not a trader, more an investor, so would like to move it on.

Are you still selling this version and for how much? I might be interested...

J have been running Metastock 6.52 since it first came out. I used in on XP, but installing it on Windows 7 is not straightforward because win 7 will not read the disk. Rather then type all that needs to be done, if you are interested in installing 6,52 on a 7 64 bit system write me chris.castlerock@gmail.com
