Hey,

I am just wondering if anyone on this forum uses bullcharts charting software with an external data feed? Are there any problems that you have faced with setting this external data feed up or using the data with the bullcharts software?

Also are you still able to retain any fundamental info like you can with the bullcharts recommended data feed?

Any advice or input on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Aramz
I've been using Bullcharts for over a year now. I use their proprietory data for ASX, but they don't provide data for the NZX, so I get that from Findata in a Metastock format. Bullcharts runs Metastock fine, but it cannot display any fundamental data for the NZX companies because I only get price data.

Some operations require that Bullcharts-Tools-Preferences-Data be changed to Metastock, whereas the normal default for me is Bullcharts data.

The thing I like most of all about Bullcharts is the fact that the indicators supplied have all coding revealed, this helps tremendously when creating your own indicators. It is extremely powerful, I haven't really learned half of it yet. Its scanning module is also very powerful.

I recently bought Tradesim, which integrates nicely into Bullcharts, again this is very powerful and I haven't learned half of it yet, but have done enough to create quite usable systems for me.

Hope that all helps. A large number of forum users swear by Amibroker, but I bought Bullcharts because of its total language flexibility, and the very reasonably priced ASX data feed.

Thanks for the reply Doug.

Yes i like the look of bullcharts very much. I would like the trade the US market and perform various scans so being able to input an external data feed is essential for me. I have never seen findata.com how do your rate their data? Other data sources like nortgate premium and bourse etc are quote a bit pricer do you have any idea why? Just wondering.

With regard to the tools + preferences + metastock etc to locate the external data fee is it as simple as clicking those buttons and then scanning the NZX? Can u keep seperate watchlists of your findata NZX stocks and your bullcharts ASX stocks and switch and scan each quite easily? Also how long does findata take to complete the end of day data update before you download it... does it take long to download?

Thanks for your time Doug

Findata is a New Zealand provider, and they're the only ones I can locate who provide NZX data. It is quick. Unfortunately they don't clean it first, so things like share splits/consolidations don't get done - a bit of a pain compared to Bullcharts excellent supply of ASX. Findata also provide overseas exchanges, but again no adjustments. I wouldn't risk using them again for ASX or any other overseas exchange. The other providers you mentioned have good reputations , and I believe do the required adjustments automatically. Maybe that's why they're dearer.

I think the answer to all your other Bullcharts queries are yes, and no problems in maintaining separate watchlists. The only problem I have had is that some specific indicators work only if the data-preferences match - eg if Bullcharts data is the current preference, some indicators won't display for the Metastock files, and vice versa. But this only occurred with a specific mix of indicators I was using - the others all work regardless.

I've sent a couple of queries to Bullcharts from time to time - they do seem to reply to emailed queries, although their answers can be a bit cryptic.
Also as an aside - they provide some Forex data included in their ASX data price. However it isn't downloaded like the ASX data - instead the graphs are updated on demand from their server. They also provide some overseas indices - I haven't used those.
Good luck

I have 2 sources of data for Bullcharts. Equis for Asian stocks, and Premium Data for US and Australian stocks. Both work fine.

If you want fundamental data you will have to stick with BullSystems data.
