Another year, another champion of the game is crowned. Congratulations to Adam Goodes, on his second Brownlow medal - he won his first one 2003.

Tonight's Brownlow was the closest it's been in a few years and the excitement in the last three rounds of votes was great television.

But it was oh sooo close again for Scotty West, who was a close runner-up. Poor guy! It seems everyone at Crown Paladium were going for him.

...As for the grand final this Saturday, (seeing as my beloved Pies are out) I'm going for the WC to avenge last year's loss. A close, high-scoring game will be an awesome way to see out season 2006!

poor westy he was shattered when he lost. he should of won. he has been such a great player for so many years now but hasnt been able to get the medal. West Coast will win on saturday

Agreed, but unlikely to be high scoring given the past history between these teams.

If the Eagles can shut down Hall, they will win.

To close to call I reckon.

I see West Coast are the favourites to win the final?

What the, did Sydney not beat them 2 weeks ago in Perth?

The NRL Grand Final will be good, could go either way. I'm tipping Melbourne though.

Yes - bad luck Scotty West. That makes it 5 times in the top 4 for the Brownlow!!

Goodes is a very good player and is fortunate to benefit from three things:

a) Sydney are a very, very even team with few standout players. All the players know their place and the "The Bloods" mentality means put the team first. There are no Vote stealers.

b) Adam Goodes is well spoken, All-Australian player, community leader and it is natural the umpires lean towards that type of person.

c) Adam Goodes is an attacking player in a team that wins its games on its defence and through suffocating the opposition. His natural attacking flair shines like a beacon when picking votes.

It also helps when the other star attacking player in the team is Big,Bad Barry - not exactly an umpy's favourite. You look at West Coast and Bulldogs. Kerr, Cousins,Judd, West and Johnson were all stealing votes from one another. There was hardly another Sydney player that came within a bulls roar of Goodes.

As for the game on Saturday - it should be a cracker. I think Sydney is a better team than they were last year - certainly much more attacking. West Coast will need to be good.

It will be a clash of the philosophies. In the Red Corner, weighing in at 300pounds, current champion of the world "The Flood". In the Blue Corner, topping the scales at 300 pounds "Man on Man".

Yes Sydney won by 1 point a fortnight ago but West Coast live and die by the sword. They just refused to play a spare man in defence. They could have shut the game down when they were more than a goal in front with 5 to play. Great to watch but heart in your mouth stuff for supporters. They leave space for the Sydney forwards who love to play that style. Leading one on one into open space, Barry Hall will mark 8 from 10. I suppose I would like to see WC win because I always feel that the more attacking team should come out on top.

I just hope it's another great one.

One last thing - thankyou to all the players wives and girlfriends who were at the Brownlow last night. Absolutely stunning is all I can say!!!! Mrs Duckman had to remind me to sit back from the TV - and to stop drooling on the rug.

LOL!! Did you have a favourite?

I thought Richo's partner was a stunner! Oh and there wasn't a 'Rebecca Twigley dress that stole the show'.

Morning scsl

No I didn't have a favourite. They were all outstanding.

I thought Nic Reiwoldts partner looked very elegant. I thought Nathan Buckley's wife wore a lovely outfit considering being in the family way (and considering some of her other choices from prior years.) It was a modified A line dress in moss green. Simple jewelry to match proving less can be more.

Rebecca Twigley was class personified. Beautiful soft pearl coloured slim line to the floor - just gorgeous. The ladies went back to a more classical look this year - not so outrageous and it worked.

Fashion dates - style doesn't.

What an AWESOME game!! :jump:

That was the BEST game of footy I've ever seen!

I had money on West Coast and that was definately hard earned. How insanely tense were those last five minutes!

They don't get any closer than that!!

West Coast 85 - Sydney 84

Although I was going for the Swans all the way, I'm not to disappointed that the Eagles got to win it. They have some great players.

I was sorta hoping for a draw there for the last few minutes.

A bit of trivia.... last year the Eagles beat the Swans by 4 points in the pre-final in Sydney and then the Swans beat them by 4 points in the Grand Final. This year, the Swans beat the Eagles in the pre-final by a point at Subiaco and now the Eagles won by a point!!

And the score 3 weeks ago?? Sydney 85 - the Eagles 84. Spooky!!

I reckon that the Swannies should all go to court and see
If the medal could be really theirs - on technicality,
If the eagles were so injured with their shoulders necks and cramps
then that makes em all ill-egals - and - THAT makes the Swans the champs.!

Yeah that's kinda freaky!

These two sides have had some close ones over the last two years. Their last five games have a combined margin of only 12 points. Today's one-pointer only adds to the rivalry that has emerged.

Yeah, these two are REALLY bad for the blood pressure. Awesome game though. Well awesome second half. About half way through the 1st quarter I decided the best thing I could do for the Swans was to stop watching - reduce the load they were carrying you know. Worked last year

I went to a garden centre, which was remarkably quiet for a fine spring Saturday. Got back just on half time with a load of soil conditioners that I'll bury with my sorrows tomorrow.

Look out next year!!!

what a great match! towards the end of the first half the match was getting a bit boring as the eagles were dominating. but the last half especially the last quarter was just awesome. great football was played by both teams. best game of the year

The difference between winning by 1 point or loosing by 1 point is amazing just look at Goodes face says it all yes I am a WCE supporter and I tell you I was getting rather nervous in the last few minutes thinking history was going to repeat itself again

cheers laurie

What a game!!! I was sure Sydney were going to get over the line. Probably justice. Fantastic game.

I invited some League followers around to watch it for the first time. In the last quarter they were lounder than I was!!! They were very impressed.

Can someone please sign up Kerr for Essendon. Oh.........and Cousins, Judd, Hunter,Waters

Told you so!!!!! :
Yes you did BraceFace - well done.

But Barry Hall wasn't so much shut down as beaten by himself. He just played ****house. Missed two easy shots. Sydney could have still won the game with Barry Hall playing badly - and nearly bloody did!!!

For me Sydney lost because Goodes was missing for most of the first half. The longer the game went on the more dangerous Goodes became. Sydney are an absolutely brilliant defensive team but they are not a naturally instinctive attacking side - Goodes is one of the exceptions.

I don't think it was any concidence that Sydney looked so good in that last quarter when Goodes had 9 possessions. He was very flat in the first half.

A sad day also for me the loss of the Fox Footy Channel is going to leave a big hole in getting AFL information/news as I live in Sydney I use to love watching some of the games again during the summer months

cheers laurie
