Aren't they already dark (black) or do you mean dark in the sense that its presence suddenly can't be detected? For instance, its gravitation pull on nearby stars.

The headline for that article is a bit misleading. It's saying that x-rays issuing from materials colliding on their journey (into the black hole) are no longer being detected.
 
“It is remarkable to see how bright the carbon monoxide emission detected in JWST NIR imaging and spectroscopy, showing a few tens of sinusoidal patterns of CO fundamental rovibrational lines,” said Dr. Jeonghee Rho, senior research scientist at the SETI Institute who led this research. “The patterns look like they were artificially generated.”
