Is this the tipping point? Australia giving up its dominance to South Africa?

Australia have been unable to get South Africa out since the first innings in Perth - and that tail is not just wagging - its breathing fire. I really like this new lad - JP Duminy - and think that it is great that Australia has some competition in world cricket for once.

Looking forward to see how the next two days play out - and hopefully this should reinvigorate world test cricket.

Cheers
Brad

Re: Australia vs South Africa

I went to the match today.. was expecting SA to be out by lunchtime, for the Aussies to get a quick 200-300, and have SA in before the end of play - I was wrong

Still, good performance by the saffas... Australian attack really has little in reserve to bring the wickets and it showed today again, as per the last day of Perth.

I think it may be a good thing in some ways, Lee is out (wasn't really performing too well lately), symonds is probably out, and Hayden will probably go at the end of this Test. This will allow the chance for a few new players to come through, maybe there will be the chance to find a hidden star, a'la SA and Duminy

Re: Australia vs South Africa

Kom Bokke/Proteas! Ons gaan lekker jol vanaand. Die manne het balles net sous a Kudu. Duminy is a star too. It was amazing to watch a 'Cape Coloured' from Strandfontein and an Afrikaaner from the old Northern Transvaal share that amazing partnership to break the backs of the Aussies. It truely is the rainbow nation now! Happy days.

...and commiserations to the Aussies. Fifteen years of dominance was some empire. No team could lose McGrath, Warne and Gilchrist and keep on its merry way.

I will be barracking for the Aussies in South Africa now but only if the belligerent selectors show some courage and break up the old boys club of Hayden and Symonds. The great Haydos has had it and it is time for an injection of youth. As for Symonds, as they said about Deano and Bev 'One Day Magic, Test Match Tragic'.

Ah the beauty of shared allegiances.

bushman
1. yep great stuff
2. and spot on with that observation as well

(plus the batsmen in the Aus team all having simultaneous purple patches).

Re: Australia vs South Africa

Sydney test squad has just been announced for the Aussies - Andrew McDonald is in the squad. Don't know too much about him apart from he is a Victorian and he is ginger. Sounds the goods to me.

Also Doug Bollinger who I have heard good things about. We might still retain these Ashes.

From The Age:
'Consistent Victorian all-rounder Andrew McDonald has scored over 300 runs and taken 25 wickets for the Bushrangers in 2008.'

Re: Australia vs South Africa

McDonald missed all of 2006 with sunburn.

SURELY they have to bring in a genuine batsmen to kick out Symonds. And SURELY they have to grow some nuts and bring in someone to put pressure on Hayden to retire. If they pick him again, they deserve to be trounced again.

But hey, it is a boys club isn't it.

Re: Australia vs South Africa

I once heard this:

Rugby is a thugs game played by gentlemen
Cricket is a gentlemens game played by thugs
and
Ice Hockey is a thugs game played by thugs!

I once met Craig MacDermott in 1987. I was in traction in hospital
at the time. He came to visit all the kids that day. Not a bad guy at all!

Your right Australia is in dire need of a great batsman and/or all-rounder.

If that was them having purple patches I'd hate to see them on a bad day

Purple Patch: A period of excellent performance, where nearly everything seems to go right, work properly, and contrasting with a more general lower level of performance.

Re: Australia vs South Africa

Sorry 2020, I thought you were referring to the current performances. Have just reread your post & realised that you were referring to the old guard

Re: Australia vs South Africa

The 3 reasons why South Africa won:
1. batted better
2. bowled better
3. fielded better
LOL

and you can add to that,
4. Smith captained better

(bad grammar, I know, but it rhymes, sorta)

Looks like it's a changing of the guard in world cricket.

Re: Australia vs South Africa

It's good for crciket that the Australian dominance has come to an end- we have barely lost series in the las 10 years...

On another note- how hard it for bowlers to get Man of the Match?? Mitchell Johnson in Perth- 11 wickets, 40 runs, and it goes to de Villiers? 10 wk hauls are much less common than centuries....
Glad Steyn got it for boxing day.

ALso think Krejzna might have been a little unlucky to be dropped from Perth- I reckon he bowled all-right, figures do not always tell the story. On the strength of his batting alone he should be there ahead of Hayden or Symonds...

I heard Doug Bollinger say the other night that he hopes to give 150,000%.

WOW

But there is one aspect of the game where we will retain our dominance. I am referring to bad manners on the field. What country could outscore us in

Sledging
Spitting
Chomping gum and spitting it out
Blowing the nose without the benefit of a handkerchief
Churlishness
Petulance etc?

This has nothing to do with bad selection or bad coaching, just bad parenting.

Re: Australia vs South Africa

I dunno Calliope the Pakistanis would give us a good run for our money, but to their list you can add

Ball Tampering
Deliberate Pitch Scuffing
Match Fixing (?)

Re: Australia vs South Africa

Firstly - HAPPY NEW YEAR all ASFers. - May 2009 bring opportunities amogst the turmoil! (my tip watch the Coal Seam Gas sector )

The cricket:
I think we are lacking an accurate meduim pacer who can swing the ball consistently the way Terry Alderman used to do it years ago. He'd bowl maiden over after maiden over and get the batsmen frustrated - cause they simply weren't good enough to hit him... and when they did it was a nick behind.
The current crop of aussie quicks seem to think if they just sling it down fast they'll get lucky - witness the erratic bowling in perth. Johnson did get lucky for a few overs - surprise surprise - when he started bowling full and more accurately - giving the ball a chance to swing. Melbourne was a bit better - but lacked the wily nouse needed to break the big partnership that took the game away from Oz.

Who that accurate swing bowler might be I don't know. They also need to fill this gap real bad for the ashes tour.

Batsmen - well Hados and symonds - as much as I hate to say it being a QLDer - they are giving their wicket away way too cheaply by playing one-day shots from the word go. They need to go back to shield cricket to learn to play along the ground at least until they get established at the crease - and if they can fight their way back into the team on merit alone - then good for them... but for the moment, I'd say 'go back to Brisvegas'!! TEST MATCH CRICKET IS NOT 20/20!!!!!
Mr Cricket - well he's just having a bad trot with the umpires... lets hope it doesn't turn into bad form.
Punter - he's obviously a great batsmen...but not much of a captain... but would clarke be any better??

All just my 's guys

and PS - isn't it nice to be able to refer to 'shield cricket ' again!! none of this bloody pura cup cr@appola! No other nation on earth would dismiss it's own cultural history in a moment like that! - just for a few sponsors $$. Not as if they couldn't have called it the 'pura' sheffield shield anyway?!

lol - no probs bmp, I just discovered that a purple patch can mean 180 degrees different to what I thought

excellent :-
or erratic :-

both meanings allegedly go back to Horace
I intended erratic of course.

Maybe I'll just say "it went pearshaped"

Re: Australia vs South Africa

Well - it's D-day - selectors seem to think bollinger might "swang that thang"... lets hope they're right!
