ASF Stock Discussion, A-H Bias?

In looking at the number of postings in the various alphabetical categories, there seems to be a noticeable bias towards A-H, with I-P next, and N-Z last. Is this a reflection of the number of companies in each category, or do people favour A-H in their stock scanning? Most stock scans that I know of present the results in alphabetical order, so perhaps the ones near the start of the alphabet get more attention, while the later ones get overlooked with the onset of tedium on the part of the investor? Maybe we should start with the Zs when we are reviewing our scan results?

This is a pattern worldwide and in many different settings, children in the first half of the alphabet suffer similar scrutiny at school and generally get better grades.

My friend from school, Aaron Aardvark, was as sharp as a pound of liver :p:

Back on topic, I have to admit the majority of my portfolio lands in the A-H

We are a lazy bunch. Other wise we would be doing something productive. Who can be bothered scanning all the way down their list to Z??

Scan the first half of your list place an order then wait for the dollars to roll in :D

I believe we are being mentally brainwashed by the society we live in. If a company is called A1 (insert name here) Pty Ltd it usually is first in the yellow pages etc. of group listings. Natural human tendencies to "instinctively" believe the comapany or product must be good because it is on top of the list probably means we as consumers have been conditioned to put our faith in this style of governance. Even looking at school grading the alphabet is biased to the letter "A" as being the echelon to strive towards. OR as trembling hand has pointed out we may just be a lazy bunch who can't be stuffed scanning all the way down to Z. Pfffffffffft !

Good to see this thread is getting the appropriate level of respect. :D

I have long noticed this bias in the forums. I wonder if this has any flow through to sp performance? I have some from the tail end of the alphabet that look way undervalued but which seem to lag the market - not getting noticed?

I am reminded of school days. With a surname near the end of the alphabet I was always one of the last to be called, but I had one particular teacher who understood this bias and occasionally went in to reverse alphabetical order. Great idea except it seemed he only did it when there was some unpleasant aspect to the situation at hand...

Just looking at my scan list... neglecting oppies, and indices etc, I see the spread of tickers as about 47% A-H, 29% I-P, and 24% Q-Z. Who in their right mind would give their company a ticker beginning with X ? Someone happy to track the indices I guess.

Does anyone make a point of steering clear of trades in a forgotten corner of the alphabet?

LMAO at the "unpleasant aspect to the situation at hand..."

AS for buying a share or avoiding a company because it starts with the wrong letter of the alphabet ... Ummm .. no, I generally try and perform some research prior to lashing out my hard earned $$$ on speculative trades. :cautious:
