Australia’s first potential conversion of a gas transmission pipeline to a pure hydrogen service is a step closer with leading Australian energy infrastructure business, APA Group, successfully completing laboratory testing of Parmelia Gas Pipeline materials in a pressurised hydrogen environment.

TESTING CONFIRMS TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF CONVERTING GAS TRANSMISSION PIPELINE​

• The Parmelia Gas Pipeline conversion project continues to provide insights into the potential role natural gas transmission pipelines can play in transporting hydrogen​

• Pressurised hydrogen laboratory testing undertaken in phase two of the project confirms the technical feasibility of converting a 43km section of the Parmelia Gas Pipeline in WA to carry 100% hydrogen​

• Potential conversion of the section of transmission pipeline would be an Australian first​

• Testing results indicate it is technically feasible, safe and efficient to run the section of pipeline at current operating pressure using hydrogen​

• The project will now progress to phase three, which will consider preparing the section of pipeline for hydrogen service, and will include detailed safety studies and conversion plans, while continuing to investigate potential supply and offtake opportunities​
