All jokes aside, ACA and TT aren't real news. An argument between two cranky neighbours or a report of the 'dangers of your local shopping centre carpark' (all reports sadly done on these shows) is not real news.

There are much more important 'goings on' in the world. Discuss...
 
I often find when flicking through the channels when ACA and TT are on they often have the same story. " Best tasting sausages" " How to save on your energy costs".
Who is copying who???? lol
 
treat it for what it is - light hearted entertainment

probably not quite as entertaining as that New Zealand Bad Neighbour show on GEM (I think)
 
Trivial mindless drivel IMO.:( But as has beeen pointed out no one went broke underestimating the intelligence of the general population.

What gets up my nose the most is the flogging of weight loss treatments and so on. I suspect these are cons. I feel almost certain these are paid stories . It would be good to see them satirised again to remind people of just how lightweight the programs are.:2twocents
 
Weight loss treatments on these shows, those late night ab machines. It all comes down to a very simple thing. Input verse output, if you input more you will put on weight if you output more you will lose weight. Some exercise 3 to 4 times per week and some healthy eating and most people shouldn't have a problem.
Mind you there is a lot of people in society who sadly aren't that smart and get taken for a ride all the time, if it isn't the ab machines its the emails saying you have won 10 million dollars all you have to do is give all your details.
Simple in life if you want something you generally have to work hard for it, if it is more money it doesn't just fall off trees, if you want to lose weight a milkshake or a ab machine is not going to do anything without the hard work of exercise. A lot of people now just want everything without having to work for it.
I think these shows gloss over this fact a bit, Roland you are certainly correct about it being light hearted entertainment.
 
ACA and TT are almost exclusively for single mums who don't do **** all day. You only have to look at the shows content about weight loss/dead beat dad's ect.

They are the only 2 shows i've ever seen who introduce a doctor as a single mum before there professional title.

Its sometimes good for abit of a joke or a laugh but i don't remember anything ever being reported serious on this show. Everything's some sort of plug for a book or product.
 
I have to agree with you nukz, articularly Tracey Grimshaw and the angle she lays. Try and read between the lines over a few shows and you soon see the angle she is pushing.
 
I haven't watched more than a minute or 2 of a Current Affair and/or Today Tonight in the last decade or so...id rather watch paint dry. :2twocents

the problem is the fans of frontline etc are a vastly different crowd to ACA & TT fans. even if it was the same audience, the satire is beyond the processing power of the mindless. "i dont get it"

dont forget the creating storylines - 'encouraging people to invest in property cos values are skyrocketing', then the next week 'house prices are skyrocketing beyond everyones affordability - someone do something', then the next week 'the banks allowed me to borrow too much. now i cant afford private school fees'. rinse and re-use.

the show is primarily made for whinging pensioners.

after dinner i go for a walk at that time of night - in summer the kids go to the park, in winter i go get the groceries.

Just watch a few shows lol :p you might have somebody who has spend her whole life studying medicine, but they will be introduced first as a single mum and then as a doctor ect.... i have never seen any show like that ever lol.

This show uses titles like single mum / war widow / struggling pensioner to a new level lol
 
well I'm glad to see the average investor doesn't take any notice of them, I recently had to explain to my aunt that it wasn't real news.

'Wow now that you say it like that it does seem kinda stupid' was her response.

Likewise.

The only time I watch any TV "news" is when either I'm on it of if someone I know or something I am specifically interested in is on it. And even then, I'm only watching to check that the reporting is accurate etc.

It's amazing the difference between Win (the regional version of Channel 9), Southern Cross (Ch 7) and the ABC at reporting the exact same thing. There were all there at the same press conference or other event but end up with a very different "tone" to the story. What Win and the ABC will consider important news, Southern Cross will give a brief mention to at best (and vice versa).

And as for the newspapers, most of the time it's word for word from the press release with no actual journalism anywhere to be seen.:2twocents

I can't comment on the aforementioned 'current affairs' programs, but I'd dispute that there is no good journalism to be found.

"The Australian" has several good investigative and reporting journalists who provide a very decent analysis of current events on a wide variety of topics.

There is often a claim that the Murdoch press is right leaning. Probably correct, but in many years of reading 'The Australian' I've seen them give credit to Labor when it's appropriate. They have been decidedly critical of the current Opposition where it's called for.

I don't think it's too easy being a journalist reporting on political stuff. Very hard to be objective and not seek confirmation of existing bias.

Andrew Bolt, whilst intelligent and capable, does this all the time. i.e. he lacks the capacity to recognise anything competent on 'the other side'.
"The Australian", as far as I can tell, does a very fair job of holding to account any politician who is abusing the trust of the taxpayer, regardless of political affiliation.

I don't doubt that there is still some good journalism around.

But time after time I see a press release from government or a large organisation simply printed word for word in the newspapers. No questions asked of anyone, and many readers would likely believe it to be the work of a journalist who has done some research, rather than the word for word corporate line that it actually is.

Some journalism there is, but not in every story. But I'd be pretty confident that many readers unfamiliar with the process assume that everything published was written by a journalist or other employee of the newspaper.

Maybe it doesn't happen everywhere. But I've seen plenty of press releases and then read them word for word in the newspaper a day or two later. It certainly looks as though nobody is questioning what has been written, they are just printing it word for word. Maybe not, but that's how it looks to me. :2twocents

Yup just set a google alert on a topic and see what arrives in your inbox. I usually find the same article goes out on the newswires and is picked up on by all the online news services and basically forwarded/ reformatted. Usually it's the headline that changes and that's about it.
