The skeet (?) or trap shooting is terrific to watch and all the competitors in that sport seem to have a sense of humour.

The gymnastics are always worth a watch especially the floor routines even without Roy and HG's commentry (the battered sav was hysterical in 2000).

Also the pool for both diving and swimming.

Tonight at 7.12 & 7.15 the two fastest swimmers this year in womens butterfly over 100m are in heats 6 & 7.And there Queenslanders.:blover:Lisbeth Lenton and Jessicah Schipper.:blover:

Jessicah under 57 sec. , go girls.

The freeways don't bother me so much - it's a road racing course after all.

I was actually a bit surprised at just how much the same as any Western city it seems to be. If someone had shown me the pictures and said it's somewhere in the US or Europe then I'd have believed them for sure. Certainly not the image of China I had in my mind previously.

In contrast to the eviction scenario in China.There was a block of flats nextdoor to me in which the residents had to leave as the place was to be demolished to make way for townhouses.They left quietly and moved to another residence.

Though the "system" in China is a communist one and if you disagree you don`t get on a Today Tonight program.

not sure ROC (Taiwan) is much better - not being allowed to open the windows on your aeroplane flights etc ..

As for that Nikki Webster bit - yep - I reckon they could have left that out to advanage - but it was a seriously small contribution to the evening ( compared to Nikki in Sydney) - so I for one am prepared to forgive em for one small bit of copying ....

But the way the scroll of history starts with making paper, and ends with the torch - how good was that !!

Australia third last in the Chinese sequence of the number of strokes to write "Aus" in chinese characters sheesh how long would it take to sort the list into alphabetical order

Anyone know if and/or how much Rick Birch contributed to the choreography / planning of the evening?

I love how she invited a whole lot of celebrities she never met to help her celebrate her recent birthday.

I wonder how they will announce "Australia" in Mandarin?

The following is mainly guesswork ...

but when the Chinese translate something, - at least into Cantonese (as against Mandarin) - it sometimes ends up as the phonetic copy of the english, eg they have (single syllable) characters that say "bar" and "dee" and "lan" etc , so Brandy for example is sometimes called and/or written by the three characters "bah lan dee", and likewise whisky is sometimes "why see kay" -

the number "8" is lucky because phonetically it sounds like "prosperity" etc - lots of couples were married yesterday etc (8/08/08) . (in Mandarin anyway). "Four" I think is unlucky - sounds like the character for "death" as I recall.

PS I know a few other words in Cantonese, lol, but not many - beer is "bear jow", a toast is "jok nei" - stuff like that

PS there's a song (wokking from memory here - 25 years ago ) .. "marn ngaw foonfu singyau geidor, marn ngaw beihok singyau geidor, .. (forget the next bit) ... ngaw hai ngaw" ...

A lot of people have that reaction when they first see the place... China's great cities are pretty impressive and growing more so by the day - it's so hard to equate what you see with a developing country tag. You can really only appreciate the "developing" aspect when you understand their urbanisation goals - only another 400 million or so to be moved to the cities in the next 15 years or so. The current plans call for 14 cities of 25 million or more. My current home town is one of the chosen super cities and only needs to squeeze in another 1 million a year to hit the goal. It will happen - there are currently an estimated 18 million migrant construction workers building the new China and they are not doing it using the old developing world manual methods - they are fully equipped and mechanised to the hilt...

I read a comment by an investment analyst predicting the post Olympic blues for China and trying to draw a parallel with what happened in Sydney and Athens. What garbage... How do you compare this juggernaut of an economy with that of a couple of small to mid sized cities... A lot of people may wake up over the next few weeks. The Olympics is but a mere blip for this economy... the story continues. I remain a metals bull...
 
whats the bet the chinese are juicing and that they are getting past the drug tests

This thread is about the Olympics, so why cant cheating in the Olympics be spoken about? And the Chinese are up there with the worst, remember their female swimming team a few yrs back? Lets just say you couldnt miss them...
 
Sydney's stadium (now ANZ stadium) was - atthe time of the Olympics 110,000 as I recall. (now reduced to 80,000)

Birdsnest is 90,000.

Attendance very poor so far at other venues - thousands of seats empty - might as well give them to those people who fell for those internet scams
