He also accused political opponents of unearthing his citizenship status.

It all seems a bit silly to me.

OK if you were born in another country, but if you were born here then I think it should be accepted that you are a citizen of this country for the purposes of Parliamentarianship.

Tony came under scrutiny because he was born in England and refused to make public his citizenship papers, until enough time passed for a redacted, reverse engineered piece of paper to be published. Gillard was checked out and passed the acid test.

I saw one case and wondered that time why the minister did not have the dignity to produce Australian passport instead. It was around 2003 or so. How many such cases over last 50 years? Where we draw the line. Who knows the pandora box will go which side after it gets opened.
One thing for sure the dual citizen ship must be scrapped. One country, One passport and one loyalty.

It is ironical if Aussies tell Tony Abbott " STOP the POMEs (Prisoner of Mother England) instead of STOP the Boat" and send Tony back to England ?? LOL

The Wiki is wrong, or at least incomplete. The 2003 changes did not cover all people born after Feb 1961 and before 1983 (ask me how I know! ). I had Right of Abode growing up, and when I lived in the UK through my mother who was born in Britain. It was only in 2009 I became eligible for citizenship, but not automatically granted it; registration is not the same concept in all countries. In the UK it means you can register to become a citizen, not as a citizen.

I don't really get the big deal with dual nationality, and I'll be keeping mine. The Australian government has NFI about what citizenship someone does or doesn't have beyond being Australian, nor should they. If I really wanted to do harm to the country on behalf of a foreign power, I'd probably be a little less obvious than to flash my North Korean passport around.

Allegiance is not the same as citizenship, which is probably why the Constitution separates the two terms.

Are you sure he wasn't travelling on an Australian diplomatic passport which are red?

You could be very correct. Yes, it was red so could be then a diplomatic passport. If UK passports are not red coloured then my presumption for so many years about the Federal Minister was totally wrong. You did me a great favour.

Australian senator Sam Dastyari holds Iranian citizenship which will not be able to be renounced until he completes the compulsory Iranian military service.
Dastyari takes bribes from Chinese.
Dastyari advises Chinese that ASIO has an interest in them.

Barnaby Joyce, is as Aussie as they come, but had NZ citizenship (which he has renounced) because of his father.
Because of this, his possible allegiance to Australia is questioned. Barnaby Joyce is no longer a member of parliament.

Sam Dastyari whose allegiance is obviously (see above) not to Australia is still a senator.

I think was aired on the Chasers, wasn't it? He is deemed to have taken all reasonable steps to renounce his citizenship, per the rules.
