This is a fantastic article written about Adam Goodes (Sydney Swans legend, two Brownlow Medals) asking that indigenous AFL players be recognised for their hard work and training, not just their so called 'freaky' skills.

Excellent reading and thought provoking fare.

In particular, Goodsy talks about breaking the cycle of cliches that mar perceptions of indigenous players as a microcosm of indigenous culture and society.

Good stuff Bushman.
There is quite a bit written here on ASF about this when applied to trading too.

.......asking that indigenous AFL players be recognised for their hard work and training, not just their so called 'freaky' skills.

In particular, Goodsy talks about breaking the cycle of cliches that mar perceptions of indigenous players as a microcosm of indigenous culture and society.

one thing not recognised enough is the efforts of the clubs to consider the potential for lifestyle changes made by players moving interstate, or country to city. stories are endless of junior stars not adapting, not just due to cultural changes (real or perceived) but also simply the 'big deal' of being in 'the big city'. the clubs make big investments in these kids and are willing to apply anything to appeal to the kids sense of belonging, of friendship, of being accepted.

as more indigenous players enter the AFL, and more stay and make a career from the game (playing 200 games, assistant coaching etc) the cliches & awe at the skills will vanish (as they are), replaced by simple respect for their hard work & ability.

In same week as you have Adam Goodes excellent article about indigenous players, you have Akermanis telling gay footy players to 'stay in the closet'.

Talk about the good with the bad.

Apologies ...... posted Docker joke in wrong thread. My son had the privelige of being one of the boys that run onto the field for a Sydney vs Dockers game last year. He is a mad keen Swans supporter. We went to the training session the day before the game. I have watched quite a few AFL sessions previously and these guys would have to be the most professional I have seen by a long shot. No mucking around, no hissy fits, no trash talk to each other. The other thing I noticed was Adam Goodes was at the front of the pack in ALL of the drills. After the session ALL the players signed autographs and were happy to do so as well as chat to the kids. Legendary stuff in my books.

Western Sydney University professor David Rowe has written extensively on culture, sport and society, and said he is "pretty horrified" by the online reaction.

"[I'm] not entirely surprised, I suppose because of the booing — either physical or virtual — has continued despite protests and representations over some time," Professor Rowe said.

I recall looking at the debate at the time when all the booing was going on, especially at its height... and I'm sorry, for me it ultimately came down to the fact that this was racism and it had little to do with sport.
Professor David Rowe

"This is an extension of that, it's just moved into a different realm, we've now moved into retail.

"Retail racism, I think we could call it."

Well well well ... no one booed Adam Goodes when the Swans were winning the Premiership or playing in the finals back then, not until he started playing for free kicks and performing dirty behind play antics did he get the crowd off side. The spear chucking incident did not help his cause one bit either.

But hey, they guy above me is a professor ... he must be right ;)

P.S. Forgot to add that David Jones has made Adam Goodes an Ambassador for their retail chain and has suffered negative criticism on many social media fronts.

I don't think the booing had anything to do with his colour and everything to do with many other factors.

There are a lot of indigenous players in the AFL and they don't get the same treatment.

People continue to call it racism, conveniently to suit their argument.:2twocents

So exactly why did a certain number of people decide to abuse Adam Goodes racially on the David Jones website ? Was he ducking his head again ? Dancing for the audience ?

Perhaps they are just online head kickers who can't resist an opportunity to trash someone they have previously enjoyed kicking the xxxx out of.

But then in Australia we all have the right to be bigots don't we ?

There are a lot of weird sub humans out there for starters but mostly I think once the tone has been set it just continues on, he will never escape this in Melbourne anyway.

Funnily enough it was "Boo" ... not much to it really but the media are having a field day and calling for a public lynching and we are all a pack of racists :banghead:

Is Cyril Rioli indigenous....I couldn't hear above the cheering and clapping for his performance in the GF?

It's a sad state of affairs when someone stands up for himself and his race instead of being meek and submissive.

Goodes is hardly a "Black Power" advocate, he just wants people educated out of racism which I think is fair enough.

Booing a professional footballer that whinges to the umpires and soccer dives deserves to be booed. Being called an "ape" by a 13 year old girl is pure racism and needs to be stamped out ... period.

Please note this is not Adam Goodes but merely a representation of what Adam Goodes did on the footy field ...

This is what Adam Goodes did with Murray Rance and was not charged for "STAGING" as the AFL ruled no contact was actually made ... Pfffffffffffffttttttttttt !!!

Funny that Steve Johnson can get away with outrageous cr@p on the field (like having a go at McVeighs nuts) and still be treated like a hero, but all it takes is for Goodes to step out of line once and he's the devil incarnate.

Nope .. Stevie J got booed every time he played in South Australia against Port and Adelaide. They hated him with a passion. He was suspended 4 times in 2014 and lashed out at former team mate Allen Christensen and was suspended for a cruial match against Sydney and missed his 250th game in 2015.

Stevie J is on his way to GWS as Chris Scott could not handle his antics anymore. Chris nicknamed him the "Maniac" for a reason. Goodes stepped out of line more than once on the footy field (read my post from 21st-May-2010, 09:37 AM) behind play he went from a gifted onballer to dirty nutcracker.

Hero to zero.

Fr1cken Swans supporters are getting to be worse than the Pies tragics :D

I agree. Being "Australian of the Year", Goodes crossed over from "sports hero" to "political hero".

Half of the population "boo" the Prime Minister at any sporting event irrespective of if they are "Labor" or "Liberal" (read colour).

I don't think Adam will be strapping on any political boots in the near future.

OK, so lets all boo Rosie Batty the next time she turns up at a footy match and says something about domestic violence, because she must be a sook too.
